If I use www.username.hubpages.com in the address bar HP will tell me that the user does not exist, most people will still type the www when putting in an address.......
You will only find the user if you omit the www............
Sunforged voiced a similar concern here:
I find it odd, too.
Technically a subdomain i.e what we have in hubpages (username.hubpages.com) is NOT supposed to have www in front of it. Or rather the convention is not to have www in front of a subdomain .
Again, technically it is possible to redirect www.username.hubpages.com to username.hubpages.com. But I guess it is too much of a trouble and creates unnecessary overheads to HP maintenance and networking staff. Basically it is not worth the effort to do it. (I would rather prefer Paul breaking his head to start another revenue stream program, rather than worrying about this)
Subdomain is an accepted practice and the perceived usability issue is not a big issue (IMHO, though).
www in www.hubpages.com is a subdomain
username in username.hubpages.com is also a subdomain
You can't have both. Well, technically you can, but it would take a lot of unnecessary configuration on HP's side and there really would be no added benefit.
