March

March being the third month of the year. It is named for the Roman god Mars. March has thirty-one days.

At one time March, was the first month of the Roman calendar. It was the beginning of spring, and the Romans were ready to go off to war. Thus, it was in honor of Martius, their god of war, that this month was named.

It wasn't so long ago, (a little over 200 years) that March 25th, was New Year's day in England and America. When the new calendar was adopted, January became the first month of the year.

March was called Leneten-monath by people living in England. Leneten-monath means " Lengthening month". This because after the first day of spring (March 20 - 21 ) the days indeed, begin to get longer.

You have probably heard people say, as I have, " March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb." Meaning simply, that the weather in the early part of March is quite often cold and stormy, whereas, the later part of the month of March is often mild and warm. At least in the northern part of the world. In the southern part of the world, March would be the beginning of fall.
