The greatest mahatma of all, known as the "father of India" is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
Gandhi as a leader was against violence. His belief was that the way a person behaves is more important than what one succeeds in doing.
For many years Gandhi worked for India's freedom from Great Britain. On August 15th, of 1947, the day he dreamed of finally came. But alas, it was also a sad day. Hindus and Muslims had many quarrels which resulted in many riots, because of their religious differences. Thus, Gandhi's beloved India was divided into two countries,,,India and Pakistan.
Gandhi was a Hindu who believed that people of all religions, despite their differences, could live together in peace. Even so, this was not to be.
January 30th, 1948, Gandhi was shot to death by a man who feared what the mahatma believed.
