   I don't think it is possible to go into a medical profession if one is afraid of blood and needles. My mom happens to be a nurse in the intensive care unit, and her schooling consisted of having to draw blood, give shots, etc. I think the majority of medical professions have to do with blood and administering needles in some form or another. I have a fear of needles which is why I know I cannot follow in my mom's footsteps with being an nurse despite the fact that I would enjoy a profession that consisted of taking care of people.
   
   But no, it would not be wise to want to go into a medical profession if you have those fears.

   I absolutely agree with Sami. Even if you plan to be a doctor that doesn't have to prick people with needles, you are going to have to have the hard nerves when dealing with patients. Great question and I wish you the bestest with whatever you plan to pursue. Best wishes!

   I think it just depends on what you wanted to do in the medical field. Not every job in the medical field requires you to be in direct contact with blood or needles.

   Years ago as a student nurse, my third training placement was in the A&E department - Christmas time, icy and frosty and very busy. Needless to say  we students started there with trepidation.
   
   An enrolled nurse who'd been there a long time, when asked how he c'So loped with the blood and gore said this : 'So long as it's not you or yours, you cope. You become detached from the emotion of the moment, and do you job as best you can to save that life'.
   
   I appreciate that medicine or nursing is not for everyone for varying reasons, but if you really want to, fear of blood or needles will not get in your way. With repitition and familiarity, and knowing that you were helping someone live to see another day the fear would eventually be overcome
   
   Now I need to get over my cochroach phobia........

   I would.  My daughter she is a phlebotomist, she is really great at it too.  I'm a hard stick, only she can get it when I have to get blood work done.  She loves her job has been in this field for 17yrs now.  Only thing she absolutely hates is when she has to get her own blood work done.  She will go into a anxiety attack and almost pass out.  She'll call me and have me to go with her and hold her had.  Her co-workers understand because many of them are the same way.

      Yes.  I can't understand it either.  She'll do babies of all ages from newborns to 6yrs old and up, elderly, cancer patients are the hardest to get because the veins are most gone because of treatments.  But she cannot get her own done.

   I think it depends on why you fear those things. If you don't like getting your own blood drawn or shots, it won't stop you from doing it to someone else. If you're afraid you'll stick yourself with a used needle and it verges on a phobia than any medical field where you'd have to work with needles is not the place for you. If you're afraid of getting blood on you, constantly going to worry (almost paranoid about getting a disease from someone else's blood), or the sight of blood makes you sick, you shouldn't get into the medical field if the job is going to put you near any bleeding people. You have to remember that even people such as x-ray techs will often be dealing with trauma victims who are bleeding. If you're not sure if those things will bother you, I'd suggest finding a hospital that would allow you do some observing before deciding to blow money on going to school to be a nurse, doctor, etc.

      I believe that it is just seeing blood of others and using any needles at all.

   Yes. There are plenty of jobs in the medical profession that do not require one to be in the presence of blood or needles. And these phobias can be overcome like all fears. Why say no to a career that you like and are interested in because of 2 issues. Nothing is perfect. Have courage!
