Maximum sustained winds of 185 mph

Category 5 Hurricane Irma has become one of the strongest storms recorded in the Atlantic, and is threatening to slam into Caribbean islands including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands with "potentially catastrophic" force on Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Irma is now on a course to hit several Caribbean islands, including the US territory Puerto Rico, Tuesday night into Wednesday.

The incredibly intense winds of Category 5 storms can completely destroy homes, uproot trees, and knock out power utilities for months.

Hurricane Irma is so strong it's showing up on seismometers — equipment designed to measure earthquakes.
