Generally to make themselves feel better about themselves or feel important in some way. If they can make other people look bad, or are the source of "exclusive information," then they have something which they feel makes them superior for the time being at the expense of whoever it is they're gossiping about.
I think peoople like to gossip to make themselves feel better rumors are cruel and are ussaly not true

Why do some people like to be mean?I really struggle to understand why so many people who live in the same world as me get a kick out of hurting others, are happy as long as someone else is miserable and get horribly angry with jealousy when they see that someone (even a friend or a family member)...
