Why does mathematics as a subject seem so tough to some students.
its simple ...because it requires a great deal of thinking and applying logic which many people find difficult (specially western countries) and its not a subject that anyone deal with their eyes closed
Good point. I think that mainly, math initially seems to generally be one of the more challenging subjects kids face in school. I think that kids are more exposed to letters, reading, and books then they are numbers and equations in their first years. I also think it has something to do with a persons natural ability. Some people just naturally find math and numbers more appealing than other subjects, and vice versa. I personally found math difficult. I was always more drawn towards english/language arts. But, facing a math class now with a whole different attitude in learning compared to years ago I'm sure I'd absorb things more effectively. There does seem to be more students who generally think that math is tough. Guess it's a good hint towards parents with young ones to focus more on that subject and be responsible for introducing math in various ways consistently and early on in order to lead towards a better attitude regarging math in the future.
Blame the teachers! I firmly believe that kids are scared out of loving math by the teachers. I have watched them in action, it is almost like they feel in order to get kids to learn math, they have to make them afraid of numbers.
Math is generally considered hard because the abstract symbols are dead initially. It's like a new language that no one speaks. Until these symbols heat up by learning the definitions, the operations, and the benefits, our mind doesn't gravitate to it.
Mathematics generally requires mental discipline. Many people want stimulation rather than discipline. As mathematics becomes more advanced, the skills of attention, concentration and abstract reasoning are required.
Many students are not used to completing tasks based largely on discipline. They are used to entertainment, stimulation and short-term rewards. Mathematics strains the brain beyond those basic areas.
The problem, always and without doubt, stems from the teacher and not the student. Assuming the student doesn't have learning difficulties and does their homework and study.
Math is purely abstract. If the teacher cannot relate these concepts in a way that students can "grasp" them (analogies + examples), then the teacher is not doing their job. In many cases, I have found that the teacher doesn't understand the math concepts well enough in order to teach them to others. They simply regurgitate whatever is in their notes, which were given to them by the board of ED.
Worse still....is that most teachers are there to earn a living, and not necessarily to TEACH!
Well, because some students have not developed the abilities that some other students developed and put to use. Math does not come natural to all students. Some chilidren struggle with it and work there way through. All the students have to face their challenge and try really hard to overcome it, if in some case the challenge can be math. It is all a matter of hard work and determination. I know that if you really want something you have to do your best to acheive it.
