    Linguist?  How many languages?

Besides my first language (English), I am fluent in German and mediocre or sub-par in French, but I can communicate in it to a small degree.  I used to read Latin reasonably well, but I'm so rusty that I hesitate to claim it.  Because of my Latin studies and further reading since then, I can figure out a certain amount of Spanish and Italian.  While I was working on my MA in German literature, I took a course in Middle High German and enjoyed it, but could not honestly say I can do anything with it now.  I enjoy trying to learn a little bit in nearly every language I come across.

Even more than because of any skill with languages, I dare to call myself a linguist because I am and always have been fascinated by the way language works:  the history of words; the way phrases and expressions change meaning across miles and across years; dialects; pronunciation; regionalisms; the relations between languages within language families; language as clues to thought processes, sociology, and self-knowledge.

HubPages is a great place to meet people who speak numerous languages, and you may be interested in some of the forum discussions on the subject.  Check these out:
