Then why the hell do you give this thread a title of "Free Web Hosting". I thing you should first go for a simple website and then think about a Forum Website. Maintaining a Forum Website for someone like you would be 100 times difficult than maintaining a simple website.

You get what you pay for with web hosting. If you want a forum, you will probably need at least one MYSQL database, for example, which most free providers don't have.

I use and recommend Dreamhost, but it isn't free. Some others here probably know some good cheaper ones.

Also, since you say you're here to practice your English, here is one way you could have worded your request that is more grammatically correct:

"I am interested in starting a forum website. Does anyone know of any free web hosting service providers?"

If you know about flying aeroplanes, then flying an aeroplane is easy.

It's the same with a forum.
If you already have a lot of internet and computing skills, then setting up and running a forum is easy.
If you know nothing, then you'll find it very hard, and frustrating. And time consuming.

But if you are willing to spend time learning new things, there's no reason why you can't learn how to set up and operate a forum.

And stay away from free websites for anything that you're serious about, or are not prepared to instantly lose.
Get a hosting package from a reliable host like , or .

If you want to use a free website for testing and learning, try
They give you a database, etc and apparently don't put advertisementa all over your pages.
They have the "Fantastico" service which installs applications very easily . I'd recommend you use SMF (Simple Machines Forum) as your forum software.
I'm using this myself, and it's MUCH easier to set up and maintain than PHPBB

But I don't know how reliable they are, or whether there are any problems with their service.

You'll also need your own domain name - I'd recommend you buy it from

        Good Luck, Eric G.

Are you looking for a free forum site that hosts the boards for you or are you looking for a site for your own domain that you take care of everything including backing up your sql?

If you are looking for free board hosting check out invisionfree, smf for free, or proboards.

But if you are looking to run your own website and just host a forum where you do all the work yourself, you are not going to find any who is willing to give you a free website.  You are going to find cheap hosting, but its not going to be free.

    Seconding what trekkiemelissa said.

If you want to buy your own domain and host a forum there, I recommend phpbb, which is open-source (free, in other words, though you would still have to pay for hosting and registration of the actual domain). I found it relatively easy to use, although I've only played with it, never actually hosted a forum.

Regarding the English issue, if you read English better than you write it, you'll probably be fine. Just get a friend with better language skills to proofread official policies/forum titles/etc. for you. If you don't read English well, host it in your native language instead. phpbb has quite a few language packs, including several Indian languages:

If so, I don't know. You'll have to research that for yourself.

If he paid money for phpbb, he either got duped or he had someone set it up for him.

The download link for the main forum software is here:

The zip files on the languages page are just language packs.

You don't upload the zip file, you unzip it, and then upload the unzipped files. I do not advise sharing your FTP username and password in a public forum. Here is the QuickStart Guide: … uickstart/

KerriG, Full marks for trying to help, but IMHO you are attempting an impossible task.
(But I could be wrong. You may have the patience of Job, and awesome tecnical skills, so feel free to tell me to go jump! )

    Mathi P,
You are expecting FAR too much help from people in this forum.

I'm pretty sure you would not be able to get a functional forum even after thousands of questions and answers like this.

You clearly do not even know the very basics of anything to do with setting up a website.
You will have enormous trouble trying to set up and run a PHPBB forum.

My strong advice to you is to pay someone to set it up for you.
Perhaps a student near you can help you.

Alternatively, take some basic computer courses at a local college, or work through some basic computer tutorials so that you understand what you are trying to do.

    Here's what I suggest:
    1. Find someone who speaks your language, and has experience with setting up websites, databases, and PHPBB.
(Although I still recommend that you use SMF.)

    2. Pay them,. or barter several hours of their time so that they can install the application for you, and show you what to do to manage it.

Sorry if this seems harsh, but I am really trying to be kind to you, and get you to face the reality of what you are trying to do here.

*g* Nah, I'm done. A little advice and pointing in the right direction is one thing, but if I have to go through a step-by-step explanation of how to unzip a file, I expect to be paid!

Mathi, You have yet to publish any hubs and you are claiming that you are naive' , I have read some of your questions and for someone who is not good at english you certainly know how to spell and somewhat complete sentences. I believe you are just B.S.  ng  others so that you can play they poor little one who needs assistance.
Normally I am nice but personally I have enough , stop asking so many questions as this is not FaceBook, MySpace or any chat room and start writing, trying do this in WordPress or Triond and see what happens. Don't play any of us for fools because I do see through you and it certainly isn't cute. Write and article and ask questions later, what are you part of the Al-Qaeda digging for answers? You certainly aren't going to get them from here.

Yah, you are correct. This person, "Mathi", is asking so many questions.... I dont know whether he/she needs those questions or just to play games to others?

I read several of posts. Every time, just throw a question is enough for that person. I don't find any of his/her hub. Why he/she is doing these?

Becasue he/she is being a Donkey's Ass and I know better when it comes to their grammar or english, who in the world is going to write , "what u think?" isn't it amazing that they can spell what and think? Ihave had enough and I wasn't trying to be rude but for goodness sake , they should write and then ask big_smile

I don't know. It's possible to spell a limited vocabulary well through sheer rote memorization alone, but his sentence structure is so consistently dreadful I haven't personally seen any reason to suspect his English skills are any better than he claims.

As trekkiemelissa said, I think the problem is more laziness than real intent to deceive. Hanging around Yahoo!Answers, it always amazes me how many people ask questions that could be answered in seconds with a simple Google search.

So if you'll decide to buy hosting I strongly recommend either Hostgator either Webhostingbuzz... I've hosted sites at both and I'm really happy with customer support and the plans that you get for your money...

Free webhosting has never impressed me. Either big ads placed all over webpages totally screwed up the look of my design, or content simply disappeared together with the account. I gave up and joined avahost. Don't already remember why - perhaps I got some coupon. It simply works and that's all I need.

Honestly I started with geocities back in 1998 I think.  I always hated those free websites as you could not really do anything with it that I needed.  It was relatively limiting in what you could do when it came to html coding in fact.

For the past few years, I have been running my own website especially since I bought my own domain and managed to find a good webhost.  I started out with Invision Hosting (Invision power board),  Main reason I think I did get them at first was because they did offer a free ipb board with the hosting but I do not need that anymore as I have my own IPB license so I can use it on any webhost compared to if I was still being hosted by them.  I have since moved on and am currently using hostgator which is cheaper than IPB ever was when it came to hosting.

Now I can't imagine going with a free webhost again as it does not meet my needs with all the things I do with my own website.  smile
