What do high powered non-heating microwaves feel like?

With all the talk about the negative health effects of cell tower, WiFi and other forms of non-ionizing (non heating) radiation, I'd like to know what it actually feels like (physical sensations) of standing in close proximity (direct exposure) to pulsed/focused) high powered microwave sources.

For example, what does it feel like to stand in front of high powered radar, or in the path of microwaves from a cell or WiFi tower? Are there any electrical engineers or microwave technicians out there who have actually felt the immediate sensory exposure effects?

A best friend from long ago used to cook his food by placing it in the microwave stream of a short range radar. He said he started doing this after a bird had accidentally flown into the stream and been cooked. He was the one who had to take care of the poor bird. He said that when he wasn't careful he felt heat inside his hands when he got too close. He didn't give any other explanation of sensations. I hope this helps.
