What place, if any, do you think standardized testing has in our schools?
I really do not like the concept of standardized testing. It lumps a bunch of children into a certain percentile based on how well or how poorly they have scored. That is not fair because some children are not good test takers, while others are better test takers. So I do not feel that standardized testing is a good way to go.
Standardized testing should be used to help teachers learn which areas need to be taught. A standardized test could also be used to show that a student as already gained knowledge in a subject in order to skip on to the next class.
Standardized tests should not be offered more than once a year and should not be used as the criteria for passing or failing students or teachers. Every child learns in a different way so evaluation of academic progress should take into account each child's own learning style.
Standardized tests should never be used to determine the curriculum. Curriculum should be based on the interests and needs of the class and teacher creating an environment of active, eager learners.

Do standardized tests determine who will be successful? As a former music teacher I noticed that a week or two before standardized tests all classes/recess were cancelled to cram test ?'s and answers to the test. Does this really prove what kids have learned or how successful they will be in life?

How do YOU feel about standardized testing? My main interest is how many parents use the test scores to determine school placement for their child (and how they achieve that placement), but feel free to talk about any aspect of standardized testing.

What do you think the biggest problem with our current education system (k-12) is? Why does it seem like the US is so "dumb" compared to other countries? What are we doing wrong?

I was just wondering if anyone else thought that standardized testing in grades K-12 is a good indicator of if a child is smart or not?
