How do we know that our other half is our soul mate or not?

Is there such thing as "soul mate"? What if the soul mate dies, does it mean that the surviving half will not be happy with a new partner?

I believe 'soul mates' exist, but we are not limited to only one soul mate.  In my opinion, soul mates are the ones we have made a deep connection with in a past life and the connection is so deep that as our soul moves on the imprint lingers, and shows up as some form of love.  So if your soul mate/partner dies, you can be happy, because you'll be able to form a new connection with a new individual or maybe even another one of your 'soul mates'...    smile  But this is just my opinion, there are probably not many who share this idea...

My answer or assertion would be thus:  I believe in soul mates, however I also believe in cause and effect/ripple in the pond.  Microcosms and macrocosms.  Concentric discipline in spin.  We are therefore like neutrons, ions, electrons, etc...  We, in our own dynamic world alone, are like planets even...  Destiny is a man-made word so I will not or cannot answer that.  It is like asking "What was before the "big bang" question.  I apologize if I am circling the issue here...  I cannot, admitedly, say from experience that life is like a membrane on some plane of existence.  I say Chaos Theory...  It is your best bet.  Your question begat more questions LOL...  Sorry if this was too long!  Sincerely, Matt.
