It's to do with your circulation at high altitudes, and because you are sitting for such a long time. To reduce swelling, just try to get up and walk around every hour or so. I think they also sell compression socks (maybe you can find them in athletic stores or ask your orthopedist) which help to keep blood from pooling in your feet.
