What are some ways that plagiarism in students can be prevented and discouraged?
Students should me made aware of what plagiarism is, how to overcome it as well as what the consequences will be. Many students commit plagiarism due to ignorance. Universities now invest in plagiarism detecting software and scan students' work first. They also make brochures available to students to explain how to write and reference properly.
My daughter's high school requires students to submit their papers through an anti-plagiarism website, which scans their work and reports back with a percentage of duplicate material found on the Internet. Most of her teachers accept a low percentage of duplicate material, but anything over 5 or 10 percent must be rewritten--and the paper must be resubmitted until it receives an acceptable rating. Woe be to the student who waits until the last minute to finish his paper, only to submit it to the website and discover that most of it has to be rewritten!
