Have you ever lost a student to jail or suicide? How would you, or did you, deal with it?
Thank goodness I have never lost a student to suicide. But I have lost a student to court related issues. I am not sure if her ended up in jail. But his attendance did become sketchy. He only talked to me about missing one or maybe two classes. But I did not see him much after that. So, I personally withdrew him from the class so he would not get an F.
There was a second student now that I think about it who did go to jail. On the very first day of class he came up to me and said, "I am not sure how long I will be able to stay because I will be going to jail." Then he simply took a seat. He only came back for a couple more class sessions. And quite honestly I was a bit relieved because I was not sure what he had done, but I certainly did not want to be put in any awkward situations. So both issues pretty much resolved themselves.
Yes indeed, during my active professional life (I'm now retired) as the Principal of a rural secondary school in a poor community with many social problems, I did loose students both to suicide and jail. The events seemed to obey some cyclic stimulus, in the sense that they came in rushes, several in one same period. I never quite got the hang of it. As a school we did all the usual things, supporting the families, and the friends amongst the school-mates. I think the best method is prevention, and training of the teacher team to keep their eyes open for the signs that usually precede trouble.
Over the years of my teaching career I have lost several students to suicide, murder and jail. Since I had no control over these circumstances, there was little I could do or say. However, I always sent a sympathy card to the family for those who died. For those who wound up in jail, I did nothing but feel sad for them.
