Do your parents have a tight rein over you or did you have a lot of freedom growing up?
When we lived in the city and I was younger, a tight rein. When we moved to the countryside when I was older, even tighter!
I'm a Brit in my early 40's, and I grew up in the South East of England in the 70s and 80s. I remember that my parents didn't provide a tight rein at all - what they did do was teach me about responsibility, kindness and accountability - In other words, I had to look after myself, be good to others and realise that my actions were my own.
I was out frequently with friends, climbing trees, playing games, getting muddy and generally having a great time. Yes, I occasionally got into scrapes, but generally had an excellent time growing up.
The lessons of responsibility, kindness and accountability have stayed with me as well, and I think they are even more important to me as an adult than they were as a child.
when i was in my school time my parents were very strict towards me ..but when i stepped to my college life dey never behave like irony ... well my father is very close to me so he allows me to go anywhere but everythng in limit ..obviously m a grl .. i enjoy my life ..down to earth .. dey never provide a tight rein on me .. love ma parents ..
My mom gave us freedom but she was leery about letting us spend the night at friend's houses. They were always welcome to stay with us, but she was afraid about sending us off somewhere. When we were older she did outlaw us dating. This was after my older sister got pregnant during her senior year of high school so I understood the knee jerk reaction.

When will some Americans come to the realization that if they want to live the good life socioeconomically, they must work for it? Why do some people believe that society & others owe them an affluent life? When do we stop such socioeconomic leeches who are liabilities?

Why so many parents want to keep their children on a VERY TIGHT leash? Isn't childhood supposedto be a time of exploration, letting go, and just BEING. Childhood should be the time of just exploring and sometimes going beyond the parameters, knowing that parents will be there to provide safety....
