Six bells commence tolling together and toll at intervals of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 seconds
respectively. In 30 minutes, how many times do they toll together ?
Options : (1) 4 (2) 10 (3) 15 (4) 16
Number 3( I think?), which is 15. The lowest common denominator is 120; therefore, they will all toll at the same time every 120 seconds, and there are 15 intervals of 120 seconds in 30 minutes. I think I can hear the bells in my head right now.
Answer is (3) 15
Least common multiple of the intervals is 120 and 120 sec means 2 min
30/2 that is 15, therefore 15 times they will toll.
The least common multiple of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 is 120. 30 minutes divided by 120 seconds is 15.
Assuming that they chime together at the beginning of the 30 minutes, they will also chime together at the end of the 30 minutes, so you add 1 to get a total of 16 times. (the fourth answer)
