      An IQ of 145 is considered near genius level.  I was tested in the 5th grade & I was told that I had an IQ of 147 & that I was a borderline genius.  I took another test & the result was a 150 IQ.   IQs in the high 140s is near genius level.  IQs at the 160 & above levels is considered GENIUS.  Wish I had an IQ in the 160s!

   Having an IQ greater than 145 means that the individual is capable of being a genius.A genius possess the following features
   1.Hardworking
   2.Determined
   3.Curiosity and Enthusiasm
                                 IQ should always be measured using an authentic test material if possible by an authorisedperson(psychologist).Also test material for that particular age should be provided.The test material should be reliable and satisfy the required guidelines. eg:mensa iq test

      So all those tests given on the internet aren't really accurate? I took one and there weren't any of the specifications you mentioned. Thanks for the answer, by the way.

   A score of above 145 puts one in the "exceptionally gifted" category, which is an easier to understand designation than "genius".
   
   A number on an IQ test doesn't make someone a genius. True genius also requires the right training and abilities. A person has to be matched with the right field for their gifts.
   
   There are geniuses whose scores don't fall in the IQ "exceptionally gifted" range, because what they do, and how they do it, matches so well with their particular gift. There are also people who score off the charts on IQ tests, whose skills are less noticed, or less valued by society, so while they may be geniuses according to the numbers, they don't appear to be any more brilliant than the next person.
   
   So, my answer to your question is that someone scoring over 145 on an IQ test could be a genius. It just depends on what they do with their abilities, and how we choose to recognize them.

      Thanks Lisa Vollrath. All the tests on the net just classify all these people as genius by birth and it just seemed to be unfair. It seemed like they were saying that the people who fall in the average category don't stand a chance. Thank you anyway.

      FWIW, your IQ can change. My first test score, at age 8, was 180. Now, I score in the 150s consistently, but sometimes, in the 160s. I'm not a genius, but those scores made a difference in how I was taught, and my extra activities as a child.

   An IQ within the 140 range is considered gifted.  It is also classified to be a genius level IQ.  IQs of 145 & above would be genius material.  Now, are people with IQs of 145 & above are genius.  Yes, they are geniuses on paper but in actuality, only a few utilize their intellectual potential to the most.  Many are in nondescript jobs, never fully using their intellectual potential so their intellectual potential lies dormant.
   
   While a few realize their intellectual acumen & make it their brand, others really are afraid of their genius, so they mask it & channel it in negative ways.   Genius is only genius if one uses it to its optimum level to enrich himself/herself & others.   Geniuses aren't afraid to be extraordinary & visionary, they embrace these components & LET THEIR LIGHT SHINE!

      Many genius-level people reject social conventions about success, and use their abilities in quiet ways. There's often a lot of pressure when identified as "genius", and the expectations may not match with the person's interests and skills.

   It's generally considered gifted, but IQ tests need to be taken with a grain of salt. They are imperfect tests for measuring something that's difficult to define.
   
   For example, is intelligence:
   -a good memory? Ability to remember facts and details?
   -Ability to learn new tasks quickly?
   -Ability to perform complex tasks, even if it takes awhile to learn?
   -creative thinking? Ability to "invent" new ideas and different ways of thinking?
   
   IQ tests are difficult also to keep free from bias, and can often offer varying results.
   
   While certainly people do fall into a range of intelligence somehow, it's so difficult to test and define. An IQ test is maybe the best tool we have for defining it, but someone scoring 140 doesn't automatically mean they are a genius, in my opinion.
