What causes a Conch shell to turn black in color?
This shell washed up on a beach in Nags Head, North Carolina.
This is a very interesting question, and to find out the answer I had to do some investigating. It seems that sea shells turn black during their decomposition process. The proteins and fats turn black, and the shells turn to iron sulfide, which gives them their black color.
