Interesting, and amusing insofar as 'bi-product' mentioned can be taken for the animal or human waste system. Should be 'by-product'. That said, the informative element is very informative. Might be informative enough to pursue the history of the Royal Mail service through a visit to the Royal Mail Museum in Phoenix Place off Mount Pleasant (at the back of the mail centre: Mount Pleasant Mechanical Letter Office where I worked between early 1997 and August 2008, latterly on the sorting machines - which i an education in itself and is still in the process of redevelopment). Anyway, how do you get to Phoenix Place? The office is situated on the corner of Rosebery Avenue and Farringdon Road in EC1. Nearest Underground stations are Farringdon, with a No. 63 bus link towards Kings Cross, or Kings Cross and take a no. 63 bus towards Honor Oak and alight opposite the side of the Royal Mail complex near Exmouth Market, cross the road and downhill turn right. The museum is on the right-hand side of Phoenix Place. There's also the possibility of a short ride on the Royal Mail underground service but could be uncomfortable if you're over 6'-0" in height. You'll get to see the platforms anyway, and a guided tour. Next to the museum is a small post office, so if you need stamps for your picture postcards from the museum there's no distance to walk. Lots of places for a drink in the area before or after. Mind how you go ...

I think this is an interesting story about the history od the Penny Black stamp. It is amazing how people managed to remove the red mark to use them again. They are a collectors item now.

Thanks foe posting Joanne's article John.

I love reading articles that teach me new things. I had heard of the penny black before I read Joanne's article, but I knew very little about it. Joanne has written an informative and interesting article. Thank you for sharing it, John.
