Korean Actor - Jung Il Woo, a star to watch
Jung Il Woo as Iljimae
I first notice Jung Il Woo was back in the year of 2009. That year, all the TV Stations in US were forced to go digital, and because of this change, I had a chance to “meet” him. At the time, Korean TV Stations MBC and KBS rented two NJ broadcasting channels 64.3 and 64.5 (sadly they are all gone now). And “The Return of Iljimae” was aired on MBC every Wednesday and Thursday night. What a treat that was. I fell in love with the drama at the title song.
This miniseries has everything: heart, brain and some footwork (action). The music is beautiful, the sceneries are breathtaking, the actors are exceptionally good, especially the male lead, I can’t take my eyes off him. At the time I did not know his name. The only “Iljimae” I knew is Lee Junki. I saw lots of promotion pictures of him, wasn’t impressed and had no attention to watch the drama. However this “Iljimae” pops up from nowhere, and totally wins me over. Compare to Comedy “Iljimae” I’m more drawn to the serious Drama “The Return of Iljimae”.
Back in 2006, Jung Il Woo had already captured the heart of millions by playing a rebellious high school student in the popular Korean Sitcom “High Kick” (Current airing in NJ on WMBC channel 64.1 at 9:30PM). "The Return of Iljimae" pushes his young career to a new height. He matures with the drama. The boyish charm disappears. In its place is an attractive young man, kind, diligent, and hard working.
His next role, however, in “My Fair Lady” is not a very successful one. After that he takes nearly two years off. This passed May, he just finished a new drama called“49 Days”, which won him lots of praises. Jung is a young man, who keeps pushing himself to be a better actor, a better person. I read many of his interviews and love the way he carries himself, humble, truthful and full of heart.
