Who is Pete and why do people do things for his sake?

I frequently find myself saying, "For Pete's sake." Someone - I think it was one of my students - asked me who Pete was. When I said I didn't know, they asked me why I was talking about him if I didn't know anything about him. So I pose the question to you, my fellow Hubbers.

Wow! I never knew that. I mean, I knew that Peter was a disciple of Jesus, but I didn't know that's where the saying originated. How in the world did you find that out?
