I think they are successful because they aren't reality. These people create what they want us to believe is reality. For example the basketball wives show half of them are not even true wives.
I really love the competition reality shows, I love that for most of them someone gets kicked off each episode, it makes it so each episode is suspenseful. For most of them, the people are talented in their field- like Top Chef and Project Runway. I think the initial appeal of other reality shows, the ones which focus on following a celebrity or the celebrity and their family, is to get a glimpse into their lives. Often times we have our own idea of how a certain celebrity is and it is interesting to see how close our idea of them is to how they really are. But I think all these additional ones, like the basketball wives wellspoken mentioned, are silly. And now there are so many of them it's all been done.
