i love The Big Bang Theory. it's my favorite comedy series without a doubt.
Depends on the genre:
Comedy: I agree with nightwork4 with The Big Bang Theory, and it's in sindication now!.
SciFi: Fringe and Doctor Who- Both so intricate, smart and fascinating.
Drama: Not really my thing.
I really don't like tv shows. So my answer is based on just how good the show is to be able to grab my loyalty.
Comedy - Big Bang Theory
Drama (female leads) - Damages
Drama (male leads) - Dexter
Reality - Khloe & Lamar.
Geek+Action+Suspense - Numb3rs
Superhero+Drama - Smallville or Heroes
Comedy - Monk
Courtroom Drama - Raising the Bar

Person of Interest
I love Criminal Minds, the show about the team of FBI serial killer profilers starring Shemar Moore, Joe Mantegna, Thomas Gibson, and others. I really dig the opening theme music. In the same vein I also recommend Without A Trace about the team of FBI missing persons investigators. These two series have been around for quite some time, but they are good -- crisp, tightly woven stories, fast moving, minimal amout of filler.

If you could revive (or extend) any TV series of the past 50 years, which would it be, and why?Drama? Comedy? Character study? Sci-fi? Action? Mystery?

One of mine are The Boondocks on Adultswim, which I think is funny as hell.
