Do you think a child should be school age before starting ballet class?

Most studios will take kids as soon as they're potty trained.  For the first few years though it's more of a creative movement class than really ballet.  Some studios have combo classes, half hour tap (mostly learning rhythm and right from left, basic steps) and half hour ballet (again, basic steps, right from left, general coordination).  Some studios will add tumbling into that (forward rolls, backbends...)
For a full hour long ballet class I'd say around ages 5-7 depending on the child.

I think ballet can be very beneficial at a young age--it teaches discipline, posture, form, and isn't too hard on the body early on.  It's excellent preparation for other forms of dance, and my daughter has continued with ballet solely as a means of staying flexible.  However, many of her classmates went into pointe class around age 12, and several of them are already suffering from foot and knee problems as a result.
