If you wanted to make an animated movie then there is some free open source software that is very powerful that you could used called Blender. .I know of three really cool short animations that were made with blender that rival anything Disney makes in my opinion. Especially the last two below.

The first one that was a pretty big hit online was Elephants Dream

The second one that I know of was Big Buck Bunny. . I really like this short story a lot and it's funny.

The last one that I have seen is Sintel.

All three were created by a small team over a long period of time, typically about a year. As you can see this software is very powerful and is capable of some really cool animations. Blender's learning curve is quite high though. It is quite possible to make a full length animated movie for free using Blender, but it would require quite a few people to get it done in this lifetime.

I face this same problem. I would like to make a live action movie, but with no funding it is really difficult. I suggest stop motion animation, which I have written several hubs about if you want to learn more. It's at least a good way to get started until you do have funding.

There is no way to create anything without some type of funding. If you have cameras, lights etc that you've purchased before hand (it was still funded)

Now if you mean getting the job done on a very tight budget.. that all depends on what you currently have access to vs what your network has access to..

So the question is what are you working with?

Good question. If you have a friends that have film making equipment , you could offer them a percentage of the earnings. God Bless You.

I've been making my own action movie right from my phone (phone video) for quite some time. During the day use my office as my background -- (in my movie it's a police station) -- my coworkers think I'm nuts, especially when I'm acting out some of the violent scenes, but, I'm making good progress. I may get fired, but, well, Spielberg took chances right?
