What sets a guitar player apart from one who is a guitar player of great talent, skill and expertise
Why is it that we like some guitars more than others when choosing to listen on a daily basis?
a real guitar player can make his guitar speak...and it speaks straight to our heart. others just make noise.
The music we listen to today is very largely derived from American Blues music, in fact, that's why & how the guitar became most identified as THE instrument of contemporary Pop, Country, and Rock & Roll music, because it was the instrument that was cheap and portable enough for the early Bluesmen to make music with. Those guitar players now who recognize this, who know where American Pop & Rock music comes from, those who understand and know the passion of the Blues, they are going to be better guitar players. I don't mean they play Blues, but if they know music then they know the heart, the core of where our music comes from, and it comes from the Blues.
Also, people approach, even use, music differently. For some, music is a social experience or feature - they want to party, they associate with the image of certain performers, etc, for them music is all about the sing-a-long . . . it makes us feel good, it's fun, let's all sing together, etc. But for some there is a more artistic approach, music is a personal expression, it's not about the party it's about sharing your heart, etc. For me, a guy strumming chords so we can all sing a long is never going to be as compelling as a guy doing stuff that only sounds like him because he's playing from his gut - so, for me, Neil Young or The Eagles are never going to be as interesting or moving as Jeff Beck or Cream.
That's why, for me, this girl (who I know nothing about) is so much more impressive than Lady Gaga, Madonna, Beyonce, etc, all put together.

The guitar was in all forms of popular music for nearly five decades. Ever since its amplification in the 30s, guitar has been heard in Jazz, Rock + Roll, and early R+B (it was already the focus of Blues and Country...
