HI have been kicking around the idea of starting a website and was wondering if any of you had some good nuggets of advice...or tips and tricks?

    Thank you!!!

Have you tested the subject on HubPages?  That's the first thing to do.  Remember it takes ten times more work to kickstart traffic to a new website than it does to a new Hub, so if something doesn't work here, it definitely ain't going to work on its own.

Get paid hosting and use Wordpress.org.  And be prepared for a steep learning curve!

Make a plan first so you have a purpose.

I have over a dozen websites. The very first thing you need to ask is, what is the purpose of the site? Do you just want to write about things?

If so a blog by wordpress is great.
Do you want to make money on it?
Are you going to stick to a specific niche?
Are you going to sell stuff on it?
Are you going to have videos on it?
    Members area?
Do you need a shopping cart system?
    Merchant account?
    forum software?
    what hosting will you use?

You need to know just what the purpose of the site is before ever even getting the domain name. Having said that, wordpress is great for both blogging and as a full website and CMS (content management system).

For most people writing on sites like hubpages is more worth it to them. However in order to make big bucks and be totally in charge, your own site or sites is the way to go. smile
