What are your thoughts on Johnny Depp playing Tonto, in the upcoming Lone Ranger movie; set to be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer who produced such films as the "National treasure" films and "pirates of the caribbean" movies.  By the way, Johnny is said to be half Cherokee, for those doubting his Native American lineage.

I don't disagree. it's going to hard to find an actor that can keep from being overshadowed by Johnny Depp, as he has quite a personality.  big_smile

i think johnny depp will do fine as tonto. he has alot of indian features. maybe they should
cast george clooney as the lone ranger if he's interested. i watched the lone ranger as a kid
and loved it, but for a movie it should be keeping the essence of the lone ranger and tonto.
how they met, what was the reason the lone ranger really wore a mask, their adventures
bring the movie up to date because in the t.v. series it was almost like stereo-typing kinda
of, but when your a kid who cares it was action.

I adore Johnny Deep.  Just saw The Tourist and watched his YouTube video with his Charlie Chaplin.

I have a new found appreciation for this actor.  He truly is grand - you are right thought he might overshadow but Tonto was in the spotlight too!

I cannot say that I like his acting, but my wife loves him and she just said, "You bet."  She also says he really is part Cherokee.  I think if he does a fantastic job doing it, he could most likely pull it off.  Great question, by the way.

I was always ogling the original Tonto - since I was a tadpole.  Really.  And so, therefore, if Johnny is Tonto - I would miss the rest of the action!  plus, I'd be holding my breath during every scene Tonto was not in.  Therefore, and also, ergo - Johnny as Tonto would be TOO MUCH!

George as The Lone Ranger - tadatadata da da daaaaah!  Hi ho SILVEEEEER  away! would be just plain ole ridiculous!  Tell those guys to leave that ole Lone Ranger alone and stop already with all the remakes.  We have plenty good um ride - um, er writers - lots of new stuff. Plenty other heep good movies, (with out all the heep good um stuff, as well)

Yeah, but with Jerry Bruckheimer producing this, I doubt they'll cancel the "Lone Ranger" though, as he seems pretty adamant about making it a reality.  However, I'm a bit surprised your not rooting for the remake to happen because of the possibility of Johnny Depp as Tonto, based on what you said. wink

I'm ready to see Johnny in almost anything, I'm just sick of remakes.  I'd like to see some new screenplays - surprise me!  I expect McMurtry or his cohorts are working on something as we speak, er um as we "write".   hmm

Yeah, that's true.  It is kind of a shame most movies that come out are remakes and reboots of other films that existed previously.  Maybe you should become a screenwriter Mega, since I know you always write great short stories.  Oh by the way, did you hear about the nominations that were announced earlier?  It turns out "Black Swan" is nominated for best picture this year. smile

            for awhile.

so, yeah, is "coming soon" like, your site?

INCEPTION will probably get the award - since they probably spent a WHOLE lot more!  and probably also because so many people will have to see it at least twice to totally get it! also it was way good for the economy since so many were EMPLOYED by it.

but I just loved the King's Speech (probably because of Geoffrey.  That guy really is an actor's actor)

I was just THRILLED that Colin got the Golden Globe.  Also an actor's actor!

I love to call them by first name, just as if I really KNOW them all!  smile

I have yet to see The Kids are Alright - did you?

Sadly, I haven't seen "the king's speech" and "the kids are alright", as I've been meaning to. I just haven't found the time lately.  sad

However, I do plan to before this month is over, as I would like to get started on my oscar hubs right away, since the nominations are in.  As for "Inception", I doubt it'll win the academy award this year for best picture to be honest.  If you look back at the Academy's history, the only film that ever won best picture that didn't have a best director nomination was "Titanic", and that was largely due to the overwhelming money it made to become the highest grossing film of all time...until "Avatar" came out that is.  Therefore, I doubt seriously "inception" has much of a chance.  Although I think it's a shame Nolan wasn't nominated for best director, as i thought it was a great film.  Plus, it seems like "shutter island" was completely ignored by the Academy this year, as it should've gotten nominations for best picture, actor, adapted screenplay, and director.  The fact that it wasn't nominated is a crying shame.

I suppose everyone remembers the sidekick more than the actual star, in the case the lone ranger, anytime you talk to people about the original it's like....Oh yeah do you remember Tonto, end of the day the Lone Ranger always asked his advice anyway!

Johnny Depp will be awesome in this role and it is going to be a Walt Disney movie so who will play the Lone Ranger, who is currently working with disney? Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

    Any thoughts?

hey guys, i just found that Gore Verbinski, the director of the movie, just announced that even though the film is about the lone ranger, it's going to be told through Tonto's point of view.  Meaning Johnny Depp will be the lead in the movie, as it seems like the story will be told through a third person narrative.  anyways, i just thought you'd guys like to know.  smile
