Japan. How could all these similar concepts and traditions develop in so many cultures in so many distant places?
Crests and coats were for identification on the battlefield as well as statements of pride and bravado.
The fact that widely divergent places on earth developed very similar traditions and cultural representations can be explained by cross-cultural exposures through trade, and the simple facts of cultural archetypes, meaning the spontaneous arising of the use of symbol in extremely similar fashion. Another example of this would be the use of the pyramid shape (Egypt / Mexico) and more grandly, the concept of a here-after / spirit world/ god.
