    "Time out"  should never exceed, in minutes, the age of the child.

    What, exactly, is gained by 5 hours of isolation?

    Yes, I had done sending my children to bed for afternoon naps right after lunch time when they were just little kids. It was part of a "growing up" discipline to get some rest and enough sleep before they head out to play. 

    My parents had done the same practice to me, my brothers and sister, all four of us sent to our beds after our midday meal.  Ma and pa used to let us believe that afternoon naps will help us grow taller. Hmm, parents probably wanted some restful and quiet time to themselves when the kids are asleep. It takes a two hour nap time to get us rejuvenated and feeling active to play with our friends outside. Soon after, ma calls for snack time and dinner starts as early as 5 or 6 p.m.

    Now, that my kids are growing young girls, I can't command them to take naps. I find that they have even more bed rest now, any time they feel sleepy.
