Is it common to spend 6 months in a walking boot after a compound fracture?

Curious about this.  My son was in a school bus crash in May.  He had a compound fracture to the tibia and lost a chuck of bone, had nails put in.  He was in a cast for a couple of months and now he is in a walking boot since July.  Doctor said today he'll be in this boot another 3 to 4 months most likely and that seems like a long time to me? He's kind of bummed about it, but he's also used to it lol - we just were hoping for a shorter recovery.

So long as the recovery is complete, the boots shouldn't bother you much. Six months will be gone in a jiffy!!
