Pineapple Willy's in Panama City Review

Updated on September 8, 2010

Pineapple Willy's

I've been to Pineapple Willy's a few times, but I've never actually eaten the food there, and now I know why.

No, it's not because the food is horrible or the service is crappy, but because it's a little pricey.

Granted, Pineapple Willy's isn't the most expensive place I've eaten, nor is it the most expensive place in Panama City Beach, Florida that I've eaten, but for the ambiance and type of food on the menu, the prices are a little much.

The drinks are pretty good, but the food is mediocre compared to the pricing. Would I go again, maybe, but I would definitely have to further examine the menu to find a better meal option, and all I had was a salad!

Pineapple Willy's is located right on the beach. You can sit inside or outside the facility, and enjoy the lovely Panama City beach while you enjoy your meal and company. The restaurant is definitely popular and famous for its large drinks and entertainment.

They frequently host bands and various events right on the beach.

Most people return to Pineapple Willy's because of the drinks and atmosphere, not necessarily the food. Although, there are many people who absolutely enjoy and love the food served, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

The Food:

We started the meal off with an appetizer- calamari. Delicious. I preferred the round calamari, as there were two different kinds in the basket- the typical ring shaped calamari or the calamari with little tentacles (they looked plain creepy).

As I write this, I'm actually craving the calamari. It was great when dipped in the marinara sauce. I just can't seem to eat calamari cold.

As for the entrees, I ordered a salad with grilled shrimp. It salad came out warm, and the shrimp was cold. Go figure. For about $9.50 I got a regular salad with about 4 cold, grilled shrimp (and no, the shrimp wasn't supposed to be cold).

I added my ranch dressing, and tried eating the salad. I couldn't finish it because the lettuce was warm. What I was most disappointed about was the shrimp; I was looking forward to warm, grilled shrimp, but they were cold. The shrimp had great flavor, but I was very disappointed that they were cold, making them not nearly as enjoyable to eat.

The ribs were definitely loved, as were the few other plates that I saw eaten. It seems that if you order a hot meal, you're good to go, but there's something with warm lettuce and cold shrimp (that's supposed to be grilled and hot) that the cook just couldn't seem to master.

From what I understand, though, Pineapple Willy's is known for their ribs, pulled pork, and even hot wings.

The Drinks:

The only thing that I have ever had at Pineapple Willy's before this trip was the famous Pineapple Willy drink. The drink contains Myers's Rum, Hawaiian pineapple juice, and cream of coconut. The pineapple juice is usually quite strong. I'm not a big coconut fan, but it really all works together.

There are a few frozen favorites, but the Strawberry frozen drink is way to sweet. If you like sweet alcoholic beverages, then this may be fine, but you have to be careful.

Choose between a 16 ounce (no refill), 24 ounce (with refill), or 32 ounce (with refill), and you get to keep the cup.
