Birthday Cakes

    actually, you can finds a decent cake to feed 14-20 people at your local supermarket, and they will even write "Happy Birthday So-and-So" on it for you. If you go to one of the "boulangeries" at the finer markets, you can find an even nicer (pastry chef-quality) cake for $30 or so.

    Why not bake your own cake.  It's not that hard especially today.  While I have recipes for all kinds of cakes from scratch I can attest that making a box cake today is not all that hard to do or that expensive.  All you need is a box cake, some eggs, some cooking oil and your time.  The icing can be bought too.  So I say do it yourself.
