    What does HP sauce taste like?

    I have the feeling it's not quite like bbq sauce.

    It's a bit hard to answer because I don't know what else you know the taste of! And I have never tasted BBQ sauce. It's not sweet, not like tomato ketchup, but neither is it sour (like lemons). It contains a lot of vinegar, so is quite acid, without burning. While it goes well with meat and sausages, it doesn't taste of either. It is "old" in the sense that it has been available for a long time, so it doesn't have the modern "curry" taste, nor is it hot with chillies or anything similar. I used to use it as a child and that wasn't yesterday, either. Now my grandchildren use it occasionally, so children like it too. It makes your mouth water, so it's helpful with something savoury that may be a bit dry. In general, most people I know like the taste of HP sauce and I put it on the table for use with bacon, sausages, fish fingers, etc but I would not put it on the table for use with roast meat, as we would have gravy with that.

      Thanks. BBQ sauce sounds like it has more sugar in it than HP sauce.
