I have lived in Georgia for about 6 years and my understanding was that they are onions grown in Vidalia, Georgia. They seem to be a little whiter and sweeter than yellow onions.
Thanks, Chuck! That's helpful. I'm looking for a substitute for vidalia's which I can't always get here in California.
Interesting! I did not know that, but Wikipia supports what you're saying: http://bit.ly/4ujFTZ.
It seems like I see them in the store every day. If you really need them, I guess you have an in. ;-)
Sweet yellow onions are a decent substitute. I have purchased Vidalias in late summer when they are plentiful, chopped them up and put them in plastic bags in the freezer to use in any recipe that calls for chopped onions. Not quite as good as fresh.
Best sweet onions you'll ever come across, I make a point of stocking up every time I go thru Georgia. They make great homemade onion rings!
A vidalia onion is a sure sign of spring here in the Northeast and a welcomed one at that. We LOVE them! They're mild and sweet and so delicious. The very best onions on the market=)

Pretty much everyone knows of the Vidalia Sweet Onions, but this year I found Vidalia Sweet Carrots at Westborn Market in Berkeley, Michigan. They grow in the same location as the onions. I found them to be more flavorful and sweet than the carrots I normally buy. I wanted to know if anyone else...

Are onions good for you?My husband and I eat a lot of onions in our meals and I just wondered if there are any health benefits to them and if certain types of onions are better than others. We eat mostly white onions.
