If I write an article comparing skin products, can I use photos of the products from the internet website such as Lancome or Chanel? Are these photos in the public domain?
That is a good question. I know you can use pictures of book covers if you write a review. I don't know about other products.
Take this with a grain of salt, but it's really a gray area.
I've occasionally used images from Amazon, when I've had the item in an Amazon capsule. I don't think either Amazon or the product manufacturer is going to have a problem with that, as I'm trying to sell the product.
If however you grabbed an image of a product and then gave it a negative review, the manufacturer or distributor might be within their legal right to ask you to remove the image due to it being a copyright infringement.
The photos that I would use are the ones that I would be recommending, so maybe it would not be a problem. I think it is a gray area. Thank you.
Your best bet for images is to either use stock photos. Istock and Shutterstock are both good and very inexpensive. If you own the product you are reviewing, you can always take your own photo and use that. Probably a better idea than just grabbing whatever is out there.
A lot of companies release product photos in a press/media section of their sites:
some examples:

(Coke)
http://www.pc.ibm.com/ww/lenovo/product_photos.html
(lenovo/IBM)
iPad page - http://www.apple.com/pr/products/ipad/ipad.html
Apple
- As previously stated - in most cases the generic product images are part of media packs -some Amazon sellers may have custom images for their stores which wouldnt be fair game,
others:

You can find these images easily with "Brand" product press photos
I usually either email the company and ask for photos like in my wheelbarrow article http://hubpages.com/hub/Wheelbarrows
or look for it in Amazon and use their link, and of course take my own pictures.

I tend to use photos of Amazon products from the product's page when I'm promoting them on an article and just credit them to Amazon. This probably isn't such a good idea, but if the product is being promoted would they mind I wonder? The complication of course is the seller on Amazon might not own...

Hi,It has been a while since I added new content and published two new articles today (the Valentine articles). I got emails "Your article could be featured", so I went in to remove a couple in-text links I added, leaving two Amazon capsules for each article (they range between 1,000 -...

Some time ago I wrote a how-to hub and provided an Amazon listing for a rather expensive product at around $150 that was necessary to complete the task in question. It sold very well, at 2-3 sales per week, making it one of my more productive hubs in terms of income.A couple of months ago,...

Hello. I've read the learning center guide on proper image use. I understood the topic well enough but what has me confused is the subject of fair use. From what I understand from reading the guide on image use, fair use lets one use copyrighted images for review-based hubs. Is this...
