I recently built a hub about a home renovation project; when I started it seemed simple enough, but it grew and grew to the point I finally split it up into two hubs, part 1 and part 2. One with 1500 words and one with 2300 words.
I have seen folks recommend not less than about 500 words, but what about maximum size? Should I have left it at around 4000 words, or is that just too long for readers to stay with?
For me personally, 4000 words is too long. I think you did the right thing by splitting it. As you're already aware, you can link between them as well, which is a good thing from an SEO point of view apparently.
That's kind of what my reasoning was, as well. They DID have different keywords and were two different halves of the same topic, if that makes sense. I just seemed better from the SEO, as you say.
I'm just so new to this that I don't know yet if my thinking is way off track, so far out of the box it just doesn't make sense. Not enough experience yet to know what will bring readers.
Thanks for the opinion.
The length of your hub should be dictated by the content of the hub.
Example: I have a hub dedicated to the Women Writers of HubPages, which I produced on Valentine's Day, however, each hub has about 8000 words.
Is that too long??? No, because of the format.
If you have a topic that has multiple streams of other topics that can be written in hubs as well, then do them in that manner.
A 4000-5000 word hub can be kept together, depending on topic.
Thanks for the answer, Cagsil. My reasoning at the time was a slightly different set of keywords as well as more space for ads such as Amazon. It also gave me the opportunity to link the two together.
As I say, I was concerned that most readers would not spend the time to read the entire hub, getting bored somewhere along the line with a lengthy hub, but I also recognize that if they don't, then they are still on MY hub instead of searching out YOURS! And of course even if I split it up as I did, they take the links to the second section with the same result.
I shall keep your words in mind, though, if I ever try to write a long one again. Good points.
Some topics are best split and some are not. I only made reference to my Women Writers hub, because of the amount of words on it.
I wrote one about the Duty of American Citizens, and it's about 4000 words long as well. It isn't a topic that can be split, nor should it be split.
That's all. I was not trying to get people to my hub by referencing it. It was an example.
Yeah, I understood it was an example, and a good one. I can also understand the Duty hub should not be split - just doesn't sound right.
My simple guide is:
No less then 300 words
No more then 2500 words (depending on topic)
The maximum can be increased
The minimum cant.
I find a good average to be between 650 and 900 words.
Two or three (maybe more depending) continuations of topics is great for page views and more chances to get a click!
Hope this helps,

It does indeed. Thanks for the opinion from someone more knowledgable than myself.

Newbie question: What is the difference between QAP (1 to 10) and Hub Score (which is WAY higher)?Or maybe a better question is: Where do I find the QAP rating for my hubs? Hub Score is obvious in stats.

I'm fairly new here, still trying to learn the rules. Apparently, my R is for Renaissance Faire hub isn't up to community standards. Any suggestions on how to improve it? The computer said not to put the URL here, so I'm not sure how to ask people to look at it to critique...

Would any of you suggest 'reporting' an obvious newbie who has obviously not read anything of the rules and protocols here, whose profile includes no bio and indicates having joined but 2 hours prior, and whose portfolio includes but a single, very short and very poorly written hub?I'm not even...

I am in the middle of drafting a hub but am finding it to be getting quite long with a lot I still want to include. Is there a recommended (or actual) maximum length that a hub can be and is there a precedent for dividing into multiple linked parts? Many thanks,Rob
