The New Start treaty, the first arms control agreement signed with the Russians in nearly a decade, calls for modest nuclear reductions, from 2,200 deployed warheads to 1,550. It will make the world safer, guaranteeing each country continued insight into the other’s strategic arsenals, with data exchanges and regular inspections.

Until now, Republicans have been relatively muted in their assessments of President Obama’s arms control treaty with Russia. But former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, the once and likely future presidential candidate, came out Tuesday with a blistering assault on the treaty and called on his fellow Republicans to block its ratification.

Mr. Romney said the so-called New Start treaty could be Mr. Obama’s “worst foreign policy mistake yet” in an op-ed column in The Washington Post and argued that “as currently drafted, New Start is a nonstarter.” He wrote that “the Obama administration has been badly outnegotiated” and gave away too much to Russia.

Mitt the Mutt is trying to frame the arguments for his next presidential bid. He's got some serious problems. He's Mormon. The Quittah from Wasillah is evangelical. However, people doubt Sarah Palin's international credentials. So that's where he wants the debate.
As far as I can tell, the treaty is a good one - mutually verifyable reduction and from what I understand, the Ruskies tried to pull a fast one on Obama at the last second - changing major clauses on verification, and Obama balked. They put the agreed clauses back in.
Mitt's got a second problem in the primaries, besides religion. (Somebody explain to me WHY religion is a problem in the GOP - when the Constitution suggests it's not an issue.) But besides religion, Mitt signed a health care bill for his State - that's the same in every major feature - to the Federal Health Care Law - that Obama passed. To oppose the Health Care Law - Mitt has to run against himself.
Ralph, you know sailing and you know in racing what goes on before the start of a race as sailboats jockey for position prior to the gun going off. That's what this is, and it has nothing to do with the treaty.
"He's got some serious problems. He's Mormon"
Oh to be as tolerant as the left.
Jim, I always have to come back and explain to you what I wrote. If you don't understand, just ask. We are all trying to be patient with you.
What I also said in the post is that as a liberal, I don't understand why religion is a major factor for the GOP, but it is. Sarah Palin's popularity is based IMO almost entirely in the fact she's an evangelical christian - and Mitt Romney is shunned - IMO - by a lot of conservatives - simply because he's Mormon. Watch the polls as the primary elections unfold. It's not my bias I'm predicting - it's the religous bias within the GOP.
I approach elections with NO religous bias whatsoever - because I believe in the separation of Church and State - and it's a concept that most conservatives can't wrap thier minds around.
Oh to be as tolerant as the left.
You are the only one bringing up his religion.
Yep! Romney's brother, Scott, lives a block down the street from me. During the 2008 primary campaign he put a huge Mitt Romney sign in his front yard. He took it down when McCain was nominated but never put up even a small McCain sign. Somebody needs to investigate Mitt Romney's record at Bain Capital, i.e., how the companies Bain bought in leveraged buyouts fared--what happened to the pension funds, how many employees were dumped and whether or not the companies survived Bain's "ministrations."
Jim, in case you didn't notice, the topic is whether or not the U.S. should ratify the New Start (Nuclear Disarmament) treaty signed recently by President Obama. If you have any knowledge of the treaty feel free to tell us why you think it's a good idea or why not. It would be nice if you attempted to add some substance to the discussion.
I like the idea of the treaty, and according to the report I read on BBC it is a good move forward.
I see no reason why the USA or Russia need to keep all those nuclear bombs, especially if they could find their way into the hands of terrorists.
I'm with you. The treaty will get the stalled disarmament process re-started.
