I've been using the keyword research tool on Market Samurai and have found a few good keyword ideas. I had some ideas today about a potential niche and I was looking at the SEO competition. One suggestion that came up had SEO competition of over 10,000 but when i looked on the first page of Google most of the sites were PR0 or 1. Is this worth pursuing ... and as a rule would these be worth pursuing??

I think it would be worth pursuing.  But have you checked the average search queries for that keyword in a day? You can use SEOBook Keyword Suggestion tool to find out how often is is used in searches.

Just because they are pr 0 or 1 doesnt mean anything. Page ranking isnt important. What it comes down to is backlinks and on page optimization.
Check out their coding and the backlinks they have. However, no service will ever show you all the backlinks a website has.

I had see the number of backlinks towards towards top ranked sites and also the PR of those backlinks and calculate if I can build more backlinks.

There can be only a few hundred sites for a keyword but to outrank the top ranked ones you need to have more backlinks than they have.

It is not quite as simple as that, anchor text, on pages SEO, and more all play a big part in site ranking.

Using the keywords in your anchor text while building links is no big deal and who can't add the terms in title and URL?

So it comes down to backlinks alone!

There is a whole lot more to on page SEO than putting the text in the title, people also use anchor text strategies.

And you think all that is a secret? Of course I and many others here know about the on page SEO factors. That almost anyone can do but one needs to see if they can build more backlinks than the top ranked ones. Someone wouldn't want to enter a niche with top ranked sites that have thousands of backlinks.

I never said that anchor text or on page SEO are unimportant so you are dragging me into a useless debate here.

It's not about the number of backlinks, but the quality of them. A backlink from a trusted, relevant and authoritative site is the most powerful. (but they are the hardest to get).

Also, just because a site is PR 0, doesn't mean they aren't building high quality backlinks. Pagerank doesn't showup until Google has a PR update, which is right around the corner. Usually Google does a PR update quarterly but not always.

PR is not a huge indicator of SERPs.

Perhaps I should have said that a few of these PR0 sites were forums. The first two sites were the official website for the product I was looking at, then there were some forum pages and a couple of selling sites but only one site reviewing the product. If I'm going for the 'review and sell' side of it then would my main competition be the other review site be my main competition?

Also, how can you tell (can you tell?) how many backlinks another site has? There's a website isn't there?

I use Micro Niche Finder to track competition.

It does sound like you have found a low competition niche though Jen, go for it smile
