What misspelling or mispronunciation of your name bugs you?

I was looking at some forum posts tonight and I've come to realize that no one seems to notice the second 'L' in my name, as in WRYLILT. I am repeatedly referred to as WRYLIT.(With the exception of Misha. smile)

So I'm just wondering, how do people misspell or mispronounce your name that really bugs you?

Maybe it's my monitor (or my eyes), but I've never seen two "t's" until this post right here.  I can see them now.  (Are you doing some kind of trick on us, or something?   lol  )

LoL no tricks! And it's two "L"s for Larry, not T for Tom! tongue

Lilt as in a ditty or song.

People get the "i" and the "l" mixed up, so I get irohner instead of lrohner. Doesn't bother me too much. They could be calling me much worse things. smile

You just wanna mess with our heads. I just thought you wrote 'i' with a capital letter!

I would have thought you'd be complaining about the people referring to you as "Ironer" lol big_smile big_smile big_smile

Same thing: Some people think I'm called 'Camio'. This both in real life and on the Internet.
I'm also asked in real life if my name has something to do with Camelot ...

Irohner, whenever I've responded to your posts I always have to double-check because I tend to type, "Ironher".   I guess because I've never heard it pronounced, I think, "iron" (as in "the metal" or the wrinkle-removing appliance), but I know I saw an "h" in there, and my brain tends to type "iron" first and then never really know where the "h" goes.  (Not that I type, "irohner", all that often on a daily basis   smile  -  but I think that means it's familiar to me, but not to my typing hands (or something).

"Lawerence".  I get postal mail that way frequently.

    "Dear Mr. Lawerence"

We even get people pronouncing it that way:  "law-er-ence"

It's "Lawrence,  Anthony Philip" or Tony or Antony or whatever but not "Lawerence"

I have to go with my real name for this one.  My last name is very common, but can be spelled a few different ways.  What really bugs me is having to confirm the spelling all the time....aarrrggghhh!  lol

If you are writing for a newspaper, it is always good to check name spellings. (People get upset when it is printed wrong.)
So if I am doing a story for publication, I always ask for a spelling even if it is "Smith", "Jones" or "Sue".
In fact I have known people named "Sue" who spell it "Sioux", and "Su".

Very much so! Name is Klara Wieck (pronounced "Veek") I don't like it when people call me Ms. Weak. Haven't they seen my muscles?! yikes

Lisa HWposted 13 years agoin reply to this

When I see yours I do think, "Klara Wick".  Now I know it's "veek".  Maybe people need to start a thread about how to pronounce the names they have on here.

(Your avatar doesn't help with the "Klara"/"Clara" thing people may be thinking about when they your name, by the way.   lol    If you have too much muscle to be a "Klara" (at least when it comes to how American's, UK, Canadians, may think of the name, "Klara" (or "Clara"), maybe your avatar needs a make-over.   hmm)

And how is it that Americans, British, and Canadians think of the name Klara? I'm curious.

        1. Lisa HW profile image62
Lisa HWposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Maybe they all don't, but I think a lot of people just see "klara" and think of the woman's name.  I had "maryblahblah" for a name, a lot of people are going to think, "mary".  The only reason I mentioned primarily English-speaking countries is that I know there are completely different kinds of names in countries in regions such as Scandinavia, the Middle East, or countries where a lot of names don't have "English-based roots".  Even countries with mostly Spanish and French names have some version of the same names, lots of times.  Other countries have names that are just completely different from those that have "some version of similar names".

So, anyway, "Clara" (which is what "klara" makes a person "hear in his head" when he reads "klara"  tends to make one think of the name, "Clara".  These days it's not a popular American/English name, but it's a well known one.  I'm sure not all do, but I'd bet a lot think of the same thing I have before I saw how the last part of your name here is pronounced.   smile

For reasons I can't fathom, some people seem to think it's appropriate to refer to me as "Rel" instead of "Relache."

Relache is a French word, not a name, and thus is unsuitable for abbreviation.  And only people who have ever studied French seem to pronounce it correctly.

..my real first name is 2 words...most times people refer to the second part of my first name as if it's my last name....anyway most times I can't be bothered correcting it...because many still get it wrong and it's such a simple name.

My first name does come in handy when telemarketers call my home....ha ha

So I get 'hello Ms. Spirit...can I sell you somethin'?', rather than 'hello Ms. SomewayOuttaHere'...can I sell you somethin'?'

Online I get the occasional (fairly frequent), "Liza".  It's OK.  I'm not a fan of either "Lisa" or "Liza" - so whatever.  smile  In offline life, there's a woman I only kind of know in my town.  She's a really nice lady who has been so nice to me.  Years and years ago she called me, "Helen" (for some reason) and then said, "Your name is "Helen", isn't it?"  I said, "No, it's...".  Well, that apparently did no good, because for years and years, every time I see her she still calls me "Helen".  I just go with it at this point.  I can't correct her and make both of us look like idiots after so long, so now I just keep hoping she never figures out that I'm not "Helen".   lol

SomewayOuttaHere,  smile   Sort of funny story:   A few days after that thread, my daughter received a box in the mail.  It was a box full of pearls that had been her late grandmother's, and that her paternal aunt sent her.   lol  She was so pleased (although I doubt she'll ever wear any of them).  There was no way I could say a word about that thread, but - boy - it was all I could think about as she pulled out one strand after another.   lol   (Returning this thread after brief hijack, but I needed to shared that story with "Gladys".  smile  )

My surname is Ibbotson which is an English name (it would have been Viking originally but that was well over a thousand ago).  Yet very few of my fellow countrymen and -women seem to be able to pronounce it, let alone spell it.

Ibbotson looks easy to pronounce (begins with a short i?). But I might have written it with one 'b'.
I'm English, too, but have never heard that name before.

Now that's interesting. One of our sons is also a Glenn who like to have both of his n's. Funny thing is-- we debated on if we would use one or two. We decided it would be better to be symmetrical, having a five letter last name.

Everyone in our family has the problem of having our given and surname transposed. Happens all the time. I suppose it happens to you as well.

In real life, I have 8 names to contend with.  Each can be shortened, but I prefer my long format given names.  Everyone has the feeling that they can call me by any one of my 8 names, without permission, and I only ever introduce myself with two.  Y'all know me as Beth and the other, well, let's just not say.  lol  Seriously, no problem except when I'm out and hear all 8 names shouted at the same time in 8 different directions by 8 different people.  Then, I'm extremely confused.   hmm
