Don't worry too much of what people think of you. Write you poems and publish them here, follow other poets and write thoughtful comments on their poems and you should start to see people follow you and comment in return on your poems.

Publish each of your poems in an individual hub, ad a photo and comments box and you should be off to a good start. You will get more people reading your poems/hubs if you also try to include some background discussion on the poem that you publish. For example if you write a love poem then add a text capsule and write how you were motivated to write the poem, what lead you to feel the way you describe in the poem etc. If you have at least 300 words plus in your hub then your poem will rate better on this site and google and you should get more readers.

Welcome to hubpages! Write away, and don't worry about what people think. For the most part people here are very nice, and if you ask for constructive criticism you will probably get it. It's about the writing, not about you, and remember, it is subjective. Good luck and don't forget to have fun!

Don't listen to the critics.  Write for the love of the story.  Learn a little about rhyme and meter if you like, use a dictionary or thesaurus when you are stumped for a word.  (Sometimes I just read the dictionary - you can express what you're trying to say much better if you have a wider vocabulary.)

Don't take criticism personally - no one can know what you're feeling when you write.  Be pleased with yourself only when you have done your best work.  Only you will know if you have done your best or if you have taken shortcuts and copped out just to get it done.  Your best work is when you read it and it says exactly what you want in the way you want to be understood.  You will develop a style over time.  That doesn't mean you can't write in any style.  Experiment.

There are many types of formal poetry - lyrical, narrative, sonnets, haiku, etc.  Formal poetry has rules regarding amount of lines, configuration of lines and rhymes, etc.   Like anything else, if you want to master something, learn about it.

Edit!!!!!  Many writers - and poets in particular - think that it's not poetry unless it's spontaneous.  Write it spontaneously then go back and tweak it.

Above all, don't make it a chore.

Some of the worst poetry - when someone just strings a bunch of words together randomly out of emotion or being high or whatever.  No one knows what the h_ll they're talking about.  This is not poetry.  Stringing words together like that takes skill and usually some experience with words.

Do not worry what people think of your poetry. You will find an appreciative, supportive, and complimentary following, almost guaranteed. I am similarly new and have been very pleased by the poetry community at HP.
