Seems you are hurt n deeply effected by an incident. If you feel that parent are misunderstanding on count of love than ! " show them what you mean by 'defining variety of love'  ".
      this will simplify the situation.

It's a phrase kids hate to hear, but it's true.  However, many adults do not know what love is either.  What the parent is trying to say is....

Don't rush things.  It takes time/experience to understand many things you can't possibly know now.  Enjoy being a kid as long as you can.  Worrying too much about love keeps you from enjoying everything else.

Perhaps, as a parent I aught to clarify what I will be meaning when I say that my kid doesn't know what love means if I ever miss out on teaching the topic well enough to tell my kid he doesn't get it yet.

When it comes to dating and possibly marrying another human being, if any lasting happiness is to be extracted from the connection, it will be requisite that my child understand what it is to give of one's self freely without expecting  anyone, including their spouse to pat them on the butt and tell them they are doing a good job.

Love will mean they are willing to work for ideals in living all their life because they care about others in the relationship even if it takes their entire life to move one inch in that direction.

The sad part is that with some teenagers who tell adults their full of it, is that it sometimes takes rebellion and beating their heads against the walls their parents told them were there in the first place in order for them to learn this simple and important lesson.  Love in the teenage mind is all flowers and sunshine but when the night comes and it will come, love needs to be able to provide warmth and light for those you love and show them the way to the next sunshiny day.

This, I am glad to say, is an issue that I will never have to deal with for two reasons.
    1. I do not have children
    2. I never heard "you don't know what love is" from my parents, because I could never tell them as a child/teen that I was in love with a boy and not a girl.

That said, I do not envy those parents who have teenagehood to look forward to!

what gives right to parents?...well dont know about rights but most parents have been there and seen that...what ever they try to say is simply from their concerness and should be taken in right light...they are the first people to love their offspring..

...love is about being able to do the same thing every day for weeks at a time - changing diapers, doing dishes, going to work, organising things - and still feeling the same way about the person you're doing it with.

...love isn't specially picked short moments spent doing romantic things such as a romantic dinner, a funny phone conversation or making love.

Yes, love is made up of the second group, but teenagers often find their type of 'love' won't survive and become the first type ...
