A stunning number of teens have lost a little bit of their hearing — nearly one in five — and the problem has increased substantially in recent years, a new national study has found.
Some experts are urging teenagers to turn down the volume on their digital music players, suggesting loud music through earbuds may be to blame — although hard evidence is lacking. They warn that slight hearing loss can cause problems in school and set the stage for hearing aids in later life.
"Our hope is we can encourage people to be careful," said the study's senior author Dr. Gary Curhan of Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
For sure, I'm 22 and I have slight hearing loss in my right ear.
I've been playing music for years and have spent a lot of time at local shows front stage if not on stage, so I think that has to do with most of it.
But I'm sure playing loud music when I was younger (with headphones) attributes to it too.
I just saw this on TV last night. Our teens are losing their hearing w/ all those little gadgets they are addicted to. IPOD, MP3, cell phones (related to cancer) - It's scary what technology contributes to healthwise....

It's an alarming statistic, those figures could well be universal, as teenagers we were all susceptible to the damage to our ears from loud music and noise, I know I was, and continue to have hearing loss, which seems to get worse with age. While researching for a hub I recently wrote about my tinnitus hearing loss, I came across a lot of disturbing facts about the symptoms, and the high percentage of the population that was affected by it. Education of teenagers regarding their hearing seems to be falling on deaf ears.
Yes, I agree with what you said.
Actually lots of people, especailly
students not having much knowledge of their
sense of hearing don't worry about and care for
their precious hearing.
The good way to loss their hearing is
to volume down the earphones or headphones!!
because once losing it means to cure it so difficultly~

Can I get disability for hearing loss in one ear?Between 3rd and 4th grade I had an eardrum removed as well as my auditory canal cut out. I also had nerves scraped away as well. A thin membrane separates my ear from brain. I have like no hearing in left ear.

Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) 500X-RE can be heard 2 miles / 2,000 meters away. At 149 decibels the blasts is not only well past the 120-decibel discomfort mark but also above the 130-decibel threshold for potential hearing loss. And before you blast me with troll bias about how it is not used...

Do you like your music loud or soft? How do you prefer playing music - loud or soft? I have noticed that mostly youngsters like it loud. As people age, they prefer softer music. Is that so?

Which is worse, being in a place that is too loud, or too quiet?
