The year end music charts have been released showing that 2010 was the worst year for rock music since 1960. In the UK only 3 rock songs were amoung the top 100 singles of 2010 the news isnt any better in the US Trains Hey Soul Sister is the only rock song to appear in the US top ten throughout the year.
In the UK there hasnt been a massive rock breakthrough since the Artic Monkeys in 2006 and there popularity has decreased since then. Rock had 27 amoungst the biggest sellers in 2008 such a huge drop in 2010 with only 3 songs is remarkeble. The music scene is now dominated by Hipe Hop/RnB, Country or Pop. Rock needs new bands to emerge even a new style kids today would rather listen to Rap then Rock 2011 should be a bit better then 2010 with Coldplays fifth studio album but will that be the only rock album to enter the top ten in the US?. Mainstream music has few rock bands most of them from the 90,s who have continued into the 00,s such as Greenday, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam but the only band there likely to keep charting high is Greenday cause they have purposely gone out of the way to make music relating to today while Pearl Jam refuses to sell out and continues to make whatever they want.
Liam Gallgher lead singer of Oasis stated in 2005 that he thought most the bands today were too busy truing to be indie shitheads rather then wanting to be the next Elvis or Beatles. I agree with this statement bands need to stop being scared of being called sell outs and just do it or Rock will be forced underground.
I'm sure you are unaware if you live in the UK, but Pearl Jam did a Target commercial not too long ago. That's pretty well selling out in my opinion.
Doing an ad isnt selling out thats ridiculous.
I wouldn't worry about the charts BR. Rock bands are still very popular and pulling in massive crowds at festivals and stadium gigs. Also for the first time ever in the UK we have Rock Radio these past few years, a channel totally dedicated to Heavy Rock and of course Planet Rock is still going.
Last year I was at Donington and almost 100,000 saw ACDC on one night then Rage Against the Machine on another. In fact more and more Rock Festivals have sprung up over the UK like and High Voltage, Sonisphere.
So I think the singles charts have become an irrelevance.
LONG LIVE ROCK n' ROLL!!! :-)
The problem with rock is not that there are less bands. The problem is that bands like Coldplay are considered Rock bands!
Nothing wrong with a bit of indie, Liam Gallagher is a tool. I would much prefer bands to try and be innovative, rather than selecting another artist to imitate.
It sounds like a case of grumpy old man syndrome. What happens when a great band does emerge? He slags them off, he even slagged The Libertines off, he doesn't acknowledge the talent of Pete Doherty. Liam Gallagher has no taste for music.
And if it weren't for his brother, he wouldn't have made any decent music himself; we all know that Noel (actually a half decent chap) was the talent in that band.
What's wrong with a bit of indie? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ-bJj21 … ature=fvst
And surely Oasis WERE considered Indie?
Liam Gallagher is arrogant and a tool but he is still a ROCK GOD. I agree with Liam most of the British bands today are rubbish. Pete Doherty is a tool aswell and more well known for drug use and dating Kate Moss then his music.
Pete Doherty may be a tool, but he does not lack talent. Although plenty of people would point out that he hasn't really done anything to harm anybody, and he should have the liberty and freedom to live his life how he wishes to live it.
You could also argue that any British person who did not know who Pete Doherty before his relationship with Kate Moss knows absolutely nothing about music.
The Xfactor crowd and red top reading neanderthals may not have known who Pete Doherty was before the tabloid scrambles, but anybody with half an eye on the music scene between 2001 and 2004 no doubt would have done.
Doherty is the best song writer of his generation, up there with the best of them. A poet, an enigma. It's funny, because he is more loved in France than he is in Britain; there is nobody like him at the forefront of the scene, his is effectively a 21st century Oscar Wilde.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbsR6pRjJHM
Watch 2:25 onwards, and then tell me that he doesn't have talent. You may also be interested in the second highest rated comment:
"exactly. i bet plently people have been brainwashed into hypocrisy by the modern media. you cant dislike pete doherty because of his drugs and then put a nirvana cd on."
I pointed out Petes drug problems because hes more famous for that Kurt Cobain is famous for his music. Pete Doherty song writer of his generation hahaha. If u want a artists who truely represents what this generation has been about its Eminem every teenager regardless of style listens to him Goths, Popular Kids all types of teenagers listen to Eminem hes been the voice of generation Y kids have grown up with him.
He might not be a rock star and u might not like him but its true he was born in genration X and has been the voice of Y.
Well actually, Kurt Cobain is most famous for shooting himself in the head with a shot gun.
I was referring to ROCK ARTISTS seeing as your thread title says ROCK ARTISTS, I am going to stop posting on your threads because you clearly have difficulties holding a consistent debate about a single topic.
What Eminem has to do with rock is beyond me. If you want a debate about hip-hop then start a thread about hip-hop, I'll give you a good debate about that too <link snipped, no self-promoting links>
No u stated that Doherty was the song writer of his generation which is complete BULLSHIT I brought up Eminem because he is the real song writer on his generation he relates to everyone.
Actually Kurt is famous for Music, Killing Himself and Drugs while Doherty is a nobody UK rockstar who never broke into mainstream and runs around making a fool of himself and tries to act cool and thinks its fun to take drugs and squirt needles at cameras he also seems to be faking most of his actions and just being influenced by past rockstars. Doherty is a joke hes more famous for dating Kate Moss and walking around like a TOOL then he is for music. Hes also a horrible father who takes drugs around his kids and has been in and out of jail countless times.
I would suggest that you refrain from making libelous comments, most specifically:
"who takes drugs around his kids". You just never know who is watching, that comment is disgraceful and entirely unfounded. I have an associate who knows Lisa Moorish very well, and at no stage would she ever allow somebody to take drugs in front of her children. You should perhaps note that Doherty does not have "kids", he has one child, who he does not live with.
Yet again, you show very little knowledge. Nirvana sold hundreds of thousands of albums prior to Kurt Cobains death, tens of millions after. Nervermind sold 26 million albums after Cobain died in 1994, having sold far less than 1 million before his death. It was released in 1992.
If you do want to continue to make statements about the welfare of other peoples kids, and subsequently ever get to talk to Lisa Moorish, then why not ask her which of her childrens fathers (Liam Gallagher and Pete Doherty) pay attention.
Liam Gallagher made the comments a while back so thats where I got the info from not talking to him personally but look it up. Nevermind went to number 1 in 1992 and knocked off Micheal Jacksons Dangerous album. For an album to do that it would have sold over a million copies easy so dont make up stuff u dont know about.
MAY 31 2005.
LIAM GALLAGHER LASHES OUT AT PETE DOHERTY
Liam Gallagher has vowd to teach Pete Doherty a lesson in parenting as he feels that the babyshambles frontman is a terrible father.
Apparantly Gallagher went to pick up Molly to take her on an outing over the weekend and was pissed to find out Doherty had abandoned his son and was spending the weekend with Kate Moss and her daughter Lily Grace.
That was just part of an articile made 5 years ago see thats where I got my information that he was a bad father.
And also Nirvanas In Utero album also went to number 1 before Kurts death haha.
So you can worship Liam Gallagher as a 'rock god' because it suits you, and then criticise the parenting skills of somebody that you don't like? You have also provided absolutely no evidence to back up your claims that Pete Doherty has taken drugs in front of his child, and as such that specific comment remains potentially libelous. So, because Liam Gallagher claims that Pete Doherty is a bad parent that means that he is? You are willing to completely disregard the opinion of the childs mother?.....
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sh … h-her.html
LIAM GALLAGHER has been blasted by the mother of one of his children for having no involvement in her life.
LISA MOORISH, who also has a child with rocker PETE DOHERTY, says the OASIS singer has neglected his fatherly duties.
She took to her Twitter account to rage at the star, saying: "My only wish is that she has a good relationship with me and her father which is between them and I would NEVER get in the way.
"You've (Liam) had an open invitation since day one. You always refused it... (sic)"
She also alleges that Liam was 'very angry' when she refused to have a termination when he discovered she was pregnant AFTER he married Patsy Kensit.
She claimed: "14 years ago I had a 2 year on/off relationship with a man from Manchester as a result of that I became pregnant and had a beautiful daughter.
"The man from Manchester was very angry that I decided to go ahead with the pregnancy and decided to stay out of her life.
"I felt sad about it but accepted it. He agreed to pay his way.
"She is now 12 and the most amazing girl, loved by all around her. She is also old enough to catch wind of articles which mention her. (sic)"
But Liam hit back when questioned about the outburst saying that daughter, Molly, is welcome to get in touch with him and he thought what he had done was the best thing because Lisa made things so difficult for him.
He explained: "She's getting looked after, everything's sweet, but as she was growing up, I thought it was the best way, instead of having me popping in and arguing with the f***ing woman. I don't speak to the mum, me and her are not on good terms.
"She (Molly) knows where I am and I'm there for her if she needs anything, like I have been since she was born, financially.
"I know it's not about that but it's better than nothing."
http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/w0004826.html
The mother of Liam Gallagher's 12-year-old daughter has poured scorn on the rocker's claims he's "a top dad" - insisting he has deliberately stayed "out of" their child's life. The Oasis star boasted about his parenting skills during an interview with British newspaper The Sunday Times last weekend, telling the publication he takes his nine-year-old son Gene to school every day.
Gallagher admits he rarely sees his daughter Molly, by his ex-girlfriend Lisa Moorish, but is adamant it's "the best way" because the former couple argues whenever they meet. But singer/songwriter Moorish has now hit back - she claims Gallagher, who she has dubbed 'The Man from Manchester', was "very angry" when she decided to go through with the pregnancy in 1997.
Taking to her Twitter.com page, she writes, "In response to an article... involving my daughter; 14 years ago I had a two year on/off relationship with a man from Manchester, as a result of that I became pregnant and had a beautiful daughter. The man from Manchester was very angry that I decided to go ahead with the pregnancy and decided to stay out of her life. I felt sad about it but accepted it. He agreed to pay his way. She is now 12 and the most amazing girl, loved by all around her."
"She is also old enough to catch wind (of) articles which mention her. My only wish is that she has a good relationship with me and her father which is between them and I would NEVER get in the way of that... I've made the best of a bad situation and will continue to do so."
In addition to Gene - whose mother is Gallagher's wife Nicole Appleton - and Molly, the rocker also has a 10-year-old son, Lennon, by his ex-wife Patsy Kensit.
The significant difference here is that you are quoting something from 2005, and I am quoting something from 2010. But its ok, because Liam Gallagher is a 'rock god', only junkies can be bad fathers
Shes a liar I dont believe any of that out to get Liam. No the term Rock God is not my opnion its fact I agree that Pete is also a icon but hasnt done anything to put his band right next to Oasis. In fact all all recent votes done Oasis has topped them all In 2008 the UK public voted whats was the best song ever? the people spoke and Live Forever was voted number 1. Whats the greatest album ever? The UK publick once again voted and once again Oasis Definently Maybe was number 1. And just recently at the Brit Awards 2010 best album of the past 30 years? guess who Oasis wins Whats The Story Morning Glory. ROCK GODSSSSS
Before Death Sales in the hundreds of thousands.
After Death Sales of all Nirvana's albums soared in the immediate aftermath of Cobain's death. Nevermind, recorded in 1991, has gone on to sell some 26 million copies worldwide since his death.
Source: The Independent
I do have to wonder why you are suddenly quoting American charts, as an individual who set up an account dedicated to British Rock. If you want to keep the conversation British, just like I do, then it should be known that Nevermind peaked at #7 in the UK album charts.
Of Course it went on to sell millions all albums sell more over the years then I use the Amrican charts because there an American band. Another huge album at the time PJ,s Ten has also sold millions.
Also the fact that it has sold millions over the years proves that Nevermind is one of the most influential albums ever and it will continue to sell more because every new generation will buy it.
Parabelle and 10 years are my favorites.
I have never heard anything like Parabelle before.
I think the problem is the radio plays crap... I can't even listen to my Chicago radio stations. I actually finally heard a 10 years song on the radio, but Parabelle(who I like better) hasn't had any play that I am aware of.
Both great bands. If you like Parabelle I think you'll like Evans Blue, it's the same singer (before he left the band).
Yeah, it surely would have been a great treat if I didn't know those songs yet! Kevin Matisyn is my favorite.
I was extremely upset when he left Evans Blue. I am glad the break up happened. Evans Blue has a new singer, not quite like Kevin Matisyn, but I really like it. But Parabelle's new CD really is incredible.
Listening to Evans Blue and now Parabelle I can really see why he left. Evans Blue is all about good hard rock, but it seems Kevin wanted to dabble around, and my God do I love that he did that.
Not to mention I gave the new singer of Evans Blue a try, and I really liked it as well. It doesn't compare to Parabelle in my books, but still another good band that I will surely continue to listen to.
Blame it on the slew of crappy TV shows here in the UK where talentless muppets via for 15 minute karaoke careers after shovelling burgers all their lives. Unfortunately the British public as a whole laps this rubbish up.
Then again, on the other hand, a lot of the rock that has been in the charts the last 20 years (since Nirvana and Grunge finally made and impact) has been pretty insipid and unimaginative, and maybe that's why it's fallen out of favour so quickly too.
I don't think that's a bad thing. The world doesn't need another Crapplay, Shite Patrol or their ilk stinking up the airwaves. It just makes your average pop music loving person think themselves alternative and rock when they're not, really.
There is no rock music because the fire has gone out. Protesting against war is now unamerican and the UK are too shamefaced about our support for the Bush Cheney money making attack on Iraq to speak out. Everyone is pretending that racism has gone away, raunchy is labelled sexist, and the creationists are busy stamping out the fires of freedom and hope and self expression. Schools are sucking the life out of the young people retarding their creative expression while not teaching them very much.
Here in China they love KTV (kariaoke) and so most pop music is made so that anyone can sing it, creating a similar situation to the dumbing down of music by the tv talent shows. There is a growing Chinese rock music segment but it is going in directions that rock and roll might not recognise, except when it strays across into heavy metal.
Maybe 2012 will be the end of the rock world.
'end of the rock world'?...... i don't think so....neva eva!
So you are listening to new rock music every day ??? or are you listening to Elton, Stones, and all those strange American rockers who never really got away from the kiddie music of country and Western ?
.. ....kiddie music? .....not sure what is considered new on 'regular' radio..they usually play anything good over and over and ruin it for me......i listen to satellite etc and catch some great music old and newer....Slash was havin' a great time in 2010 recording music with a variety of artists (Astbury and Lemmie)....could be a slump...i recall in part of the 80's there was a slump and i turned to R&B and reggae for awhile because some of the music coming out sucked including what some of my favs were producing at the time....but it's neva eva goin' away....there's too many who love R&R....and many R&R artists who love what they do.....
...BP mentioned 'sniff' music below ..... i agree whole heartedly....can't stand the whining of some it.....there's no meaning, no depth...just whining....
hey CM!....good to run into you!
Good to bump against you too SO - time difference is a bummer for chatting - I normally open up just after everyone has gone to bed and quit just as your afternoon is getting thin
....i see yor messin' around this a.m. (my time)....
....from yur peace luvin' R&R luvin' canadian nutter.....
just off to bed in a minute - and we are just off to Beihai on the coast tomorrow where it will hopefully be a little warmer!
keep on rockin' - g'night !
.......have a great time...i'll have to google Beihai to see what it looks like...
...later ....off to work...
I think rock is pretty much dead. There are a couple of artist who have put out some good songs. But they used to put out good albums. No Beatles or Led Zeppelins in the past 20 years or so.
There cant be any new Beatles or Zepplin nobody can copy there styles but the 90,s were full of great bands so last 10 years has been empty but the 90,s did have Radiohead, Oasis, Blur, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains list goes on.
rock music is dying out and is to be replaced by a new breed called R&B
Do i like it? No
Should it be happening? No
Can i stop it? No
the sad truth is rock music, and alternative rock music is a dying breed and soon there will be nothing on the radios but... 'sniff' songs with no depth and a lite and or techno beat..... 'sniff'
I've been waiting a long time for a band to come along and break through the fog of mediocrity in the music scene right now. It seems like every new artist is manufactured, either by American Idol or Disney pumping out the next big teenybopper.
Even in the 90's, bands that managed to break through were self-destructive and didn't last long. Nirvana made hair bands irrelevant overnight, but we all know how that ended. Then Oasis was being compared to The Beatles, but they got caught up in the fame and squabbled amongst themselves instead of working on making good music.
I still think rock music has some life left in it, it's just that the quality at the present time isn't there. Eventually the Nickelbacks and Coldplays will fade away and hopefully some good bands will take their place.
Id rather you leave cause most of the stuff that comes out of your motuh is utter rubbish to even know who Kurt is u have to know his music first then learn about the suicide while Doeherty has his ugly face all over controversial moments for stupid acts as he tries to make his band more popular and he should focus on his music more instead of being a wannabe rocker who took things a little too far.
You have to say that Oasis are influential too, their influence has already been seen in the Artic Monkeys and Kasabian, amongst others. They sold over 20 million copies of Whats the story morning glory.
Coldplay have also claimed to been influenced by Oasis aswell.
I HATE Coldplay! Bleh!!! Simply don't know what all the fuss is about!
This band has been around since the early 1990s but survive and thrive and one of their songs has been used as intro to Boardwalk Empire (HBO I think) and the movie Inception.
I think their name is a hoot.
I like their jingle jangle guitars and tambourine.
Singing... not so much. He tries to sound British and he's from SF.
But the guitars, chord changes, etc. are delightful psychedelic "revivalist" rock a la all the greats of the '60s.
This particular song reminds me of "Lightning Crashes" by Live.
Anyway, my two cents.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFoop72c … re=related
Coldplay made there first album in 1999 in the early 90,s they were still in school haha. Lightning Crashes by Live is a fantastic song.
Coldplay is very polarizing for some reason. People either love them or hate them. Nobody is lukewarm about them.
Live's "Throwing Copper" holds many great memories for me.
The '90s had some really, really great music.
I must be getting old as I don't like very much of today's homogenized bubblegum synth pop crap.

In this new era where hip hop and other forms of music have gained huge popularity rock music has lost its fanbase and its sheen? Do u really think rock music has died?

Will there ever be another marked influence in rock music?Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Presley influenced the music of The Beatles and the Rolling Stones and those groups in term influenced rock for many more years to come and still do to a degree....

I would have to say as of right now, my two favorite bands are 10 Years and Parabelle. Also I would have to say Staind would have to be one of the top bands for my generation. If you have a great rock band, or in a new band, please post here. Do not be overly promotional, casual is always the best

Let me start .. Joy Division, because of unique sound. There really wasnt anything like it at the time and since. Many bands model themselves on them and they are thought of as highly influencial. If it werent for Joy division, there may not have been Editor and Interpol, for example.
