Is there any way to directly find the number of hubbers you follow instead of manually counting from 'my account'.
If there is no other way, then I think HP should add this feature. Someone from HP staff??
The only way, it seems, is to go to 'Hubbers You Follow' and count.
Hi anujagarwal. There is no easy way for you to check other than a manual count or asking a staff member, but I've just had a look, and you are currently following 136 people--the same number of followers you yourself have!
Thanks Maddie for letting me know and I appreciate your time.
Here's a somewhat clumsy way to do it on Windows:
First, go to your http://hubpages.com/my/favorites page.
Highlight all the people you follow and do Control-C
Open Excel or any spreadsheet and paste into a new sheet.
Scroll down to the last row. Divide that number by 5. That's how many.
On a Mac, just open Terminal, type "wc -l" (that's a minus 'ell'), press ENTER, then paste in the stuff press CTRL-D, then again divide that number by 5.
Just another of the many, many reasons to prefer Macs
I don't know if that people you follow page ever goes to multiple pages. If it does, you need to do this for one page, count the full pages it uses, and then do it for any remaining partial page.
The link goes to Hubbers you follow, not those who follow you.
If you select and copy all the Hubbers you follow and then paste them into an Excel spreadsheet, divide by two, not five. (Each of those whom you follow has two rows of information.)
Did I miss something, or am I being Chrissy Snow or Rose Nylund?
Yes. He wanted to know the count of those he follows. The number who follow you is already listed on your Profile page.
Chrissy Snow or Rose Nylund? Who are they? (Seriously if they are celebrities I pay no attention to)
Chrissy is Susanne Sommers in Three's Company; Rose is Betty While it Golden Girls. Both supremely "blonde" characters.
I'm of the right generation, but my memory is not that good
That comment about Chrissy and Rose was a bit of a nod in Camlo's direction, since he was wondering if he were a bit blonde today.
Sherri, I wasn't wondering at all - I know I'm a bit, or maybe very, blonde today.
I just noticed I haven't got Excel, but Open Office Calculator. I just tried to paste the people I follow and the program crashed. I'll try again.
Can we do what WE suggested using Firefox?
No.
Firefox is really becoming an inferior product. It is bloated and slow and buggy. Better than IE, but Chrome works with almost everything and is generally far better.
Have just downloaded Chrome, and yes, it works really well. Much faster than Firefox. I see it also has a spell checker here as I write this message, but all my words are wrongly spelled because it's looking for German spellings ... I'll have to fix that.
Oh, and I know how many Hubbers I'm following now.
I admire your sense of adventure and your persistence.
Sherri, this Google Chrome is wonderful. Glad Pcunix recommended it.
I also see that I'm not following more than follow me, even if it is a few more than a quick count would require.
Keep Firefox around. There are a few pages that don't play well with Chrome. Very few, but you could hit one.
Thanks for the advice, Pcunix.
Actually, with Firefox, I was beginning to think there was something wrong with my computer. Changing to Chrome feels a bit like swapping a Ford for a Rolls Royce. Hope it stays that way.
I know the feeling.
Firefox developers have ruined the product. It has become slow, buggy and crash prone.
The only good thing I can still say is that it is better than anything Microsoft ever did.
I was living on a ship for the past couple of weeks (moved out on Wednesday, thank God), and my internet connection was unbearably slow. I was using Firefox, but tried out IE just to see what would happen, and it was faster, believe it or not, even if not what could actually be called fast.
Camlo, I have neither Chrome nor FF, so I don't know. You know, maybe before you crash your system again, just email Maddie or the team to get the count?
Download Chrome. It takes seconds and is a better browser anyway.
No, I don't really need to know, I just find it interesting to find a way of doing it ... as though I haven't got better things to do.
I think I'll download Chrome now ...
Me too. It's interesting. And now that we've spent all this time investigating workarounds, maybe the HP Team will put this feature on a To Do list, prioritized for some time in the future.
Yes, but then we'd have to ask on 'Suggest a New Feature', and then everyone would want to know why we need to know how many people we are following ... as though there were something wrong with wanting to know.
I especially love the folks who assert that since they don't care, we should not.
There's one long time hubber famous for that
Camlo, you bring up a very interesting thought. A year ago, I printed a list of all whom I follow. I had two purposes in mind: 1, to weed out the list (lots of folks I followed hadn't done anything on HP for a long time), and 2, to acknowledge those whom I kept with a comment on one of their Hubs, a kind of a good will gesture.
It would have been helpful to have had a count to begin with, and even more helpful if there were a filter that went along with it where I could "quit following" those who had no activity, let's say, within the prior 6 months.
Not only is there nothing wrong with wanting to know, there are good reasons for wanting to!
I agree. Good thing you got that in before you-know-who tells us we don't need this
Then I'm pretty sure many people would find such a feature useful for numerous very good reasons.
Obviously the idea is not to simply know the count but to get something better from that. I hope this feature will soon be in the to-do list.
I thought that was what this thread is all about, as per the title also.
This totally loses me. Why divide by two or five?
Because each entry on that page is 5 lines.
When you paste it into Excel, it will take up a certain number of rows. Each entry takes 5 rows. Divide by 5 to get the number who follow you.
Try it - I think you might understand better if you just did it.
Do you and I have very oddly different versions of Excel, or something? Each entry takes up 2 "lines", not 5.
You are looking at the wrong page. http://hubpages.com/my/favorites
That's exactly the page I'm looking at, and each entry occupies two Excel rows.
Maybe it is different versions of Excel. Mine took five rows too, but I had to paste first into a notepad, then into Excel, to get rid of the pictures and other formatting.
Maybe that's it, Aficionada. Excel 2010 here.
@PC: Are you using a different version?
I used Excel 2008 for Mac but did not have to cut out pictures, etc.
I didn't have to cut out any pictures or anything else...looks like Excel 2010 for Windows does something different than Excel 2008 for Mac.
I'm not sure that it's the specific version of Excel that keeps the pictures. It happens to me when I copy and paste into any MS program, including Word. I haven't really tried with other non-MS software.
I've now tried it with Word Perfect, and the pictures and formatting were erased. No need to use Notepad at all!
It may also be the cut and paste.
I use a paste buffer tool that allows me to hold multiple paste buffers and select what I want to paste. I couldn't exist without it!
It could be your buffer vs Windows' buffer, your Excel version vs mine, Chrome vs IE...it could be lots of things we haven't even thought about yet. It's amazing that data transfers as homogeneously as it does across all these platforms and applications.
What sort of tool is that? Does it come with a Mac or is it an add-on? Downloadable?
Addon.
Mac has several: http://aplawrence.com/MacOSX/shadow.html
I use Jumpcut. I especially like it because i can easily preload it with stuff I use frequently.
If you search for "Windows Clipboard Utility", you'll find plenty for Windows.
Thanks for the info! (Was the link for your own personal copy of it, or did you create it?)
I'll check it out this weekend. -- Heading out shortly for a family member's birthday celebration.
No idea. It's five with my browser.
But WE's CTRL-F is easier.
Thanks PC for finding out a better way than a manual count.
How about this:
The total number of Hubbers - The number of Hubbers you don't follow = The number of Hubbers you do follow.
(T - NF = DF)
Um ... WE, I've noticed I'm a bit blonde today, but how do I find out how many Hubbers I'm not following?
There is no way, Camlo. It was a joke.
I'd suggest using my method (a couple of posts up) and then subtracting from the Total.
Then you can double check your math using WE's method
(Yes, that's another joke - except the part about how you can count your followers which really is up above http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/66024#post1449329 )
Yes, another joke. The total changes just about every minute, also, as new people keep signing up.
I think the easiest way is just to ask Maddie.
Maddie?
You think the spreadsheet method is really that hard???
Pcunix - my math is so bad, anything to do with numbers is hard for me. My math teacher at college is tearing is hair out - I've been 'learning' binomial formulae for the past two weeks, and still can't get it.
Camlo - I was also in the same impression
I found another method:
In Google Chrome, type Find (CTR + F), followed by typing "Quit following" into the search box that appears.
Then the search box will show how many instances of "Quit following" there are = how many Hubbers you follow.
Yes. That's even easier. Of course we DO have to wean people off that idiotic Internet Explorer first..
Note that it will say something like "1 of 190" but it is in faint text, so you might not notice it immediately.
Really this one is better and I need to take PC's advice to download Chrome.
Thanks. Chrome is a great browser. But of course you are right, it would be optimal if HubPages made the figure available.
I'll definitely try my hands on Chrome. From the discussion so far, it is obvious no one cares for that figure but would still like to see a direct count.
Early on in this thread, I filed a request to have it moved to the Suggest a New Feature forum. Hasn't happened yet.
I didn't realise you'd done that, WE. I actually started a new thread here: http://hubpages.com/forum/post/1450833 .
One other glitch in Pcunix's method is that the number is thrown off if any Hubbers you follow have "No Published Hubs."
No it isn't. Not from Chrome, anyway. Maybe IE does dumb things - it's well known for screwing up perfectly good HTML.
But stil - use WE"s method. Much faster.
Interesting! The reason the number is different (for me) is that there is no line that corresponds with how many days/weeks/months ago the most recent hub was published. Without that line, an unpublished Hubber represents only four lines, instead of five. I don't get how Chrome gets around that. It happened the same way in the MS Word method I described above.
Another similar method, if you have MS Word:
Highlight and copy all Hubbers you follow.
Paste into a notepad (or other text file) to clean out the formatting, then select and cut that text.
Paste into a blank Word document.
Use the Find and Replace function:
Find ^p and Replace with ^t
Click Replace All. When it has finished, the box will report How many replacements. That will be the same number as the number in Excel that Pcunix mentioned above. Divide that number by 5 (and round up, if it's not a whole number). That gives the total number of Hubbers you follow.
You can also paste in the page of Hubbers you are following, do a search and replace for "Quit following," select "replace all," and Word will tell you how many instances = how many you are following.
Of course!! (facepalm)
That's the simplest and most straightforward method of all.
I have another feature I'm going to suggest, but I'll start another thread, since it's not quite about the same thing as this one.

Where can I see how many hubbers I am following?
by Peter Owen 12 years ago
Not complaining but I don't understand hub. In an attempt to get involved, I started following a lot of Hubbers. Many of them followed me back and I am seeing a dramatic increase in viewing traffic for my hubs. I guess Hub didn't like this since they took my score from 89 to currently 78 and...

Do people really read the hubs of people they follow? Is it just me but I tend not to follow too many hubbers because I would never have time to write if I read all the hubs they submit. Perhaps I’m being naive here … but it seems disrespectful to follow them and then not read their work. Do people...

How do some hubbers get so many followers in such a short space of time. Okay - some people write brilliant hubs on interesting topics but it still puzzles me. I expect someone will come back and say that I should have read something somewhere that makes it obvious - so apologies if...

Is there such a thing as following to many hubbers.Do you read all Hubbers you follow?
