This is probably the most interesting piece from that BBC report:

Technology news website Electricpig.co.uk was downgraded by 94% by the Panda update, according to Searchmetrics.

Site editor James Holland told BBC News: "We haven't seen an immediate impact.

"Comparing our traffic from Google for that week, we're actually only down 0.5% versus the week before Panda took effect.

"That suggests most of the keywords Searchmetrics are measuring us against weren't being clicked anyway, and our best-performing stuff is still doing the business."

Their top content is still performing.

    "Don't be evil"
    HA!

Amongst the big winners are four porn websites; Siteslike.com, Youjizz.com, Perfectgirls.net and Keezmovies.com which for unknown reasons are considered by Google as being more trustworthy than pcadvisor.co.uk, one of the biggest technology websites in the UK.

Incredibly, YouTube, Google.com, Blogspot.com and Android.com all went up!

    While Microsoft-owned Ciao dropped 94%

I sounds as if you are suggesting that google is more interested in padding their pockets than in giving searchers the information they want.  Is this possible?  Could it be true?  Tell me it ain't so! lol

As usual, it would appear than American companies are far more interested in short term gains than in long term profits and general company strength.  This has proven in the past to be detrimental in the long run - perhaps google will reinforce that radical idea as bing and yahoo gain more and more market share.  We can but hope.

recommend1posted 13 years agoin reply to this

I am broadly 'for' the Panda !

I see my website at the top of places it should be, my hubs have increased traffic with every move of Panda, especially my poetry hubs.

The suppression of the trillions of same same product hubs is a good thing in my view, the suppression of false backlinking is also a good thing, and moving this kind of stuff to the social sites where it is a social activity with no Google search weight is the right thing to do.

Content farms that have promoted the BS should be slapped, allowing mass twaddle should be slapped.

The only criticism I have is that it is clearly Panda-ring to paid advertisers and the news corporations.  And of course its open acceptance of pornography which I personally (along with two-thirds of the world) believe is deeply harmful to society as it degrades the performers and watchers equally.

I agree with what you are saying except for the pandering to news media bit.

We need real newspapers that spend a lot of expensive time researching real stories. A lot of great newspapers are on the ropes and their disappearance would be a tragedy. If this saves the serious media from the aggregators, scrapers and worthless blog ranters, it will be worth it.

It also worth remembering that a lot of stuff here is not twaddle- though a depressing amount is

Unfortunately the media is controlled by a few super rich super-maniulative people with an agenda.  If they are trying to regain prominence then you can bet there is a 'next' right wing move planned soon.

And yes - there is considerable stuff here that isn,t twaddle, unfortunately I believe that straight product hubs are twaddle along with the more obvious stuff.  This one issue raises the junk content consideranbly in my opinion.

          1. Will Apse profile image88
Will Apseposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Products hubs are junk if the writer is just writing copy. A well researched product hub that happens to be a genuine article with relevant ads displayed can be helpful.

As for the newspapers- right wing newspapers that have a culture of honest and intelligent reporting should be welcomed by everyone and there are plenty of these. The right's recent plunge into imbecilic popularism in the US is the real problem.

Those people who think Panda is a Rupert Murdoch plot have completely missed the point.

            1. recommend1 profile image59
recommend1posted 13 years agoin reply to this

right wing newspapers in the same sentence with culture, honest and intelligent is somewhere out there beyond laughing big_smile

But I can agree on what you say about product hubs, although many of those I hubhop are just a mess of trivial key words to support the placement of the advert without adding anything. Junk.

A total Rupert Murdoch plot - maybe not - but will he have a finger in this somewhere? yes he will.

Its difficult at the momment to say if the Panda update actually helped the users to find what they wanted for. Although hubpages and ezinearticles quite often produced quality content articles/guides there are a great number of duplicate and/or misleading articles that aimed to get backlinks to sites and/or sent users to a landing page.
I had a new project on the way which I was going to link with hubpages in order to bring a number of new users here through affiliate links but since my hubs got hamerred I need to rethink my strategy.
At the momment hubpages has fallen from google's grace and I am thinking of maybe removing most of my hubs and transferring them into a blog (since blogs didn't get too affected especially those who are working on their own domains).

From what I can see Hubpages.com dropped about two thirds looking at their actual traffic stats, on quantcast. The reports using keyword visibility are highly flawed, everyone knows it, they are definitely not to be used as reliable sources of data.

Some of the big reports being used by news sources have used keyword ranges of 10,000 words, considering the number of keyword combinations available that is like going to China and judging the views of the entire poplace on what a single person has to say.

Nate, you haven't been able to reach 100,000 views in 19 months with 153 hubs. So it could've been possible that you weren't getting enough traffic from Google already and most of your traffic was internal.

Uh...1: How do you know anything about my personal statistics?
2: I'm fairly certain the majority of my traffic comes from people who are searching for information about Job Corps and work place survival suggestions as the economy is such that people are doing a lot of work related job searches.

I may not have 100,000 views, but I don't see how that's relevant to what I'm earning.

For a short while my traffic dropped to near nothing, my hubs were not being found by search engines at all. Other than visitors from hub pages, yahoo, and peoplestring there was no traffic. When I searched last night I had 160 plus click able links leading to hub pages on Google again. There were also people popping in from the Google search engine. Just after panda nothing could be found for fifty pages back on Google. I have been wondering if its the new website I opened which has changed this. I don't think so because its not coming up on Google.
      Good luck to you

I'm keeping an eye on things hoping they will improve as I like a lot of the things about hubpages but i have to say that my articles on Excerptz are getting better traffic though it's way too early to be too informed about it. I do like the fact that a 300 word article is ok there and I think (correct me if I;m wrong) that 500 words is a target here which, depending on the subject sometimes leaves me padding it out a bit

I don't think Rupert Murdoch has anything substantial to do with  this new algo changes. Google is way richer than Murdoch. They can't be manipulated, this is business. Their algorithm simply spews out on the top searches those scraped news and old big companies with old data.

    1. Mark Knowles profile image58
Mark Knowlesposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Murdoch blocked the Google 'bot from The London Times and the Wall Street Journal. Not in google results at all. Nothing. He threatened to block all his other sites along with all the other media sites.

Guess who won in this change? That is right - the big media and "news sites".

These guys own TV, Radio and Print.

You don't think they want the same domination on the Internet?

      1. prettydarkhorse profile image63
prettydarkhorseposted 13 years agoin reply to this

I am not sure about that, perhaps that is the case. I just believe that the algorithm they used in these updates are taken from the study of the "learning tree" by Biswanath Panda et al wherein as early as 2009, they began to introduce some changes - the main theory is that people will be the one who will rank sites and everytime they search the web, they are being tracked and searches become personalized according to tastes and preferences. That aside from qualitative indicators like layout/adverts, credibility of authors - health and finance. I don't know for duplicates and grammar - how Google ranks sites for those factors as definitely G can't stop it.

That being said, forums, news, big media (CNN is a competitor of Murdoch), quick answers, yahooanswer, wikianswer win in these updates.

It is just my analysis that these kind of sites, UGC, news, are ready answers to a person who is searching the Internet for quick and easy answers. That is why when they try to find answer these type of sites come out. I noticed that the forums are easily indexed now too.

In an interview with Singhal and Cutts, after the first update, Feb 24,  "Amit Singhal: Well, we named it internally after an engineer, and his name is Panda. So internally we called a big Panda. He was one of the key guys. He basically came up with the breakthrough a few months back that made it possible."

But of course your preposition is valid. Perhaps in addition to the Panda algorithm, they also succumbed to Murdochs pressure.

Well, Maita - the future is going to be very interesting. Apple have a plan to possibly stop Google being the preferred Search Engine on the iPad and iPhone. They are coming up with their own search, and they already have iAds on both of those platforms. What is even more interesting is Facebook has filed patents for Search Engine Algorithms! Ooouuch! Search Engine anyone?

Oh and don't forget Twitter, who are about to buy up Tweetdeck for about $50 million! Both Facebook and Google are highly interested in acquiring the blue bird. LOL! I think Google have more to lose if they don't buy it up, as Twitter might start on the Search Engine philosophy, and Google don't need more competition.

I think that Google's future is too closely tied to Search, and it could unravel on them. There are too many people able to catch up on the Googlemiester now. And there is a Social Networks Versus Search battle lining up. Small and medium businesses are looking to the Social Networks (Facebook twitter, Linked-In, etc) for the Marketing side of business, which Google is weak on. And Social Networks are all free, which is good for us as it keeps lots of Google stuff free too.

If one company owned all search and Social too, they'd own the whole Internet. They are all itching for a big slice of the pie, and I don't wanna end up as someone's dinner... LOL! And yes, his wife is Asian, she is a smart lady too! Have a super day, Maita! smile
