Happy Sunday, May 1, 2011, ~6:35 AM.
Here is the local wind report from NOAA:
<start>
Today: … wind between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Tonight: ... East wind between 5 and 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Monday: …. Calm wind becoming north between 10 and 15 mph. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph.
Monday Night: …. Northeast wind between 5 and 10 mph becoming calm.
<end>
According to NOAA , winds will remain calm after Monday.
If the bird gets another E-ticket Disney ride, I will so report it.
This bird has won me over; as such I have begun reading up on hummingbirds.
Anxiety gone-still following with increasing faith in a joyous outcome. Thanks for the continuing updates para.
Bird Report, ~1:25 PM
Once again the bird has been in the nest during the day. But, once again, it has been intermittently.
The winds so far have been well under the 20 mph predicted max.
Sometimes the nest got an A or B Ticket ride with the bird.
Sometimes the nest got an A or B Ticket ride without the bird.
We have two kinds of hummingbirds here; the Rufous (Rufus?) and the Anna's Hummingbirds. They are so fast, and they come to our feeders every minute or so. They are even there when it's almost dark out. Sometimes one little male gets possessive and won't let the others near the feeder. I've only seen baby hummers once and i couldn't believe how small they are! Sometimes they come right up to me and hover in the air, looking at me, especially if i have on pink or red. So cute! Thanks for the updates, very interesting.
Yep, you are not kidding about the red.
According to what I’ve read everywhere, hummingbirds are all over that color like bees on honey.
Edit: Your knowledge of specific species puts your level of knowledge way beyond mine.
Nah. So far I’ve managed to keep my usually demented humor mostly in check. So far…
Bird report, late afternoon/evening.
All appears well.
Score remains at: Bird 7 ~ Darwin 0.
Bird report, ~5:45 AM.
Temperature in mid 40’s.
Bird torpid in nest (as is supposed to be).
Score unchanged at: Bird 7 ~ Darwin 0.
SURVEY TIME!
I need to make some decisions; both as to whether to continue this thread and as to certain other contemplated activities.
If you are following this thread, then please let me know. This inquiry is directed at both HP members and non-HP members (non-HP members will have to sign-up with HP to reply).
This poll will close sometime later today.
I thank everyone in advance.
Are you still taking the poll/survey - and how? Is a report here sufficient or do we need to contact you through your contact button?
Yes, I am still following this, wanting to know how Mama H. is doing. But I know it is a big demand on you for us to ask for frequent updates.
Plus, the news about Osama bin Laden has definitely upstaged the drama in your yard.
Please don't stop this altogether! But, if you need to make the reports less frequently, that would seem to me to be eminently reasonable.
The survey is on for several more hours. Posting here is the much preferred method.
I'm fine with it.
Never heard of him. Actually, having that tidbit of news interrupt my TV show was an excellent way to end an excellent weekend. Feel-good news like that doesn't happen very often!!!
We will see how the survey goes.
Bird report, early afternoon.
We are being slammed with 45 mph gusts of wind around here. Local news confirms that. So much for NOAA’s slacker predictions of 20 mph… NOAA also said the high would be 80 degrees; it is already 85 degrees and climbing.
Survey/Poll Closed
Well, folks. As you can see, the results were underwhelming to say the least. I am 99% certain that the results would have been the same even without today’s competing news.
Google very quickly indexes HP forum posts. As such I was kind of hoping that this thread would develop a non-HP member following, but it was not to be. If there had been a lot of outside interest, at least one of them would have bothered to sign-up and post a reply here.
So I have transferred this thread to my new hummingbird blog. All my future updates will be posted there.
As you know, it would be a major no-no for me to post the link to that blog here. However, I have never abandoned my fellow HP members before and I’m not about to start now. For anyone who is interested, you can go to my one-and-only bird hub and you will find the link there.
I may even continue to post on this thread. But be forewarned that my sometimes demented humor is no longer on a leash.
Only my blog knows the answer to that question...
Amazing! I got to see the second bird actually hatching. All the details are you-know-where.
Very Bad News.
It’s been 3 days since my previous post here. All has been well during that time.
As I said in my first post, I would report what happens no matter what; good or bad.
I had glanced over at the nest two times earlier this morning. One time mamma bird was flitting around as usual; another time she was sitting on the nest; all was well.
I just now had glanced over a third time. Momma bird was gone and the nest somehow looked different. I looked closer. The nest had been partially smashed down in front. The nest was empty; both baby birds were gone. I checked the ground for fallen birds; there were none.
I have not a clue as to what could have happened. I would be interested in any theories anyone cares to propose.
I know I’m overreacting, but this really pisses me off. If there ever was a bad-karma county, the one I’m living in is it. I’d come to that conclusion sometime ago; this latest incident merely reinforces it.
This is difficult to propose because their persecuted enough and I hope its not the case...paradigm, do you have any snakes in the area that could have gotten into the yard?
I am happy to say that this seems to be a snake-free zone. Little lizards galore, but no snakes.
Well, I just heard a crow… (Which happens to be a natural enemy of baby hummingbirds.)
Btw, I went looking for the neighborhood cat to see if there were any telltale feathers or other evidence on him. I haven’t found him yet. I don’t really consider that fat slob a viable suspect anyway...
Well, barring any new evidence; the crow is the most likely suspect.
And that is that.

Any suggestions on a reliable hummingbird feeder?I bought one. It leaked and was a joke. Please help me find a reliable one that can keep my hummingbirds happy.

Have you ever had an "interaction" with a hummingbird? Did it acknowledge your presence? One day in the garden, a pesky pigeon was wanting to eat on our flowers. I got out the broom to chase it away. The pigeon flew to the roof next door to wait until I went inside, only to return after I...

Just had to share - I was just out in my backyard and a hummingbird flew past me so close that I flinched! I remember when I was about ten our family was vacationing at a secluded lake at the end of a long, bumpy, horribly narrow, logging road in northern British Columbia - I saw a...

I remember reading somewhere that the hummingbird has an incredibly short life span. Is that true?
