The local squirrel population has invaded my son's porch, and taken over the bird feeder. What can he do to discourage them?
Put it on a pole, and keep the pole lubricated.
these are determined hungry little critters that have taken his bird feeder hostage. He has it hanging from a tall porch rafter and they jump from a crossbeam! He tried the lubricant trick, with no luck...I understand that squirrels gotta eat too but this is ridiculous! I wondered about squirrel repellent...is there such a thing?
Got a bird of prey? Sometimes, real or fake can do the trick. Have you considered a humane trap? bait it w/ seed, then transport the little dears elsewhere. Preferably the woods.
Thanks, Druid Dude! Would an artificial bird of prey scare off the birds too, do you think?
You can put it in a wire covered nest which had to be lubricated also
First you must tell him to STOP feeding the birds NUTS!
- The squirrels are collecting some of the food for brown bears as well as themselves!
- But if he stops feeding the squirrels, then the bears will turn up and destroy his bird feeder!
- So he should start feeding the birds Bananas as a replacement as then the squirrels can naturally ween the bears off his nuts!
- Brown bears hate bananas and will give up if they think that the squirrels can only get bananas and not nuts!
- But don't use bananas to replace nuts if he has wild baboons living in the neighborhood!
- Hopefully he has no moose living near by!
A spring loaded bird feeder uses the squirrel's own weight to close the feeder when they hang on it. They can get no food and (hopefully) leave it alone.

Some people seem to really love squirrels, and others seem to view them as rats that live in the trees, that spread disease and sickness much like sewer rats. Do you like squirrels? Or do you view them as disease spreading rodents?

I had this nasty squirrel eat away at my pumpkin this morning?? I am on the 4th floor in an apt. complex so the squirrels must be pretty desperate for food? Any suggestions on how to get rid of them or deter them just until halloween is over at least
