Well I have braces tell your kids they dont hurt and you look cool and grown-up wearing them. They can pick the colors for their braces and afterwords they will be happy they did it.

They can also cause many problems later in life if your Orthodontist doesn't understand the relationship between the function of the jaw and the alignment of the teeth.

Braces can do some real harm to the TMJ and people are clueless as to how this creates spinal imbalances.

There is a lot more to this than people realize.

Just make them realize that it will give them a better looking smile in future.

I had braces, both kinds - removable ones and permanent rail track ones. I had the removable ones aged 11 because I was too vain to have tracks. They didn't work cos I kept removing them. Aged 17 I decided enough was enough, got the rail tracks. Yes they weren't great to look at - but i am talking 15 years ago here- they are a lot better these days. It took a couple of years - not long in the grand scheme of things - and I now have perfect teeth. It is a very hard thing for a child to have - mainly because of other horrible children- but in the long run, well worth it. I truly believe that if my parents had made me take the rail tracks when I was 11, I would be thanking them for it today. I know with my children, if they need them, they will get them, and we will work through whatever gets thrown at them together. Most kids will get upset to be told they need braces, but they are more resilient than we think. It also helps that celebrities these days wear them too- so you can use them as an example, and keep sight of the end goal - a lovely smile which will be the envy of all those who called you names. Good Luck!

Yes, apparently there is a lot more to it.

I was like a lot of kids -- big teeth in a small mouth.  I wore braces in the 1960's, and they did things a bit differently back then.  I had 4 permanent teeth extracted to make room for the other teeth.

Many years later, a dentist was concerned that I might have TMJ problems, but I never did.

My sister tells me that in conversations with her kid's orthodontist, extracting those permanent teeth is to be avoided (if possible).  It changes the structure of the cheekbones and the shape of your lips.  Who knew?

Overall, though, I am very glad that my mom insisted I have orthodontic work.  There are some digestive problems that often develop if a bad bite is not corrected.

If you have doubts, get a second opinion. Some doctors put kids in braces that don't really need them. Anything to make $$ off of vulnerable parents. I know of a doctor who worked mostly with Medicaid patients, and most of the kids ended up in braces! I knew a woman who worked in the office.

Ya,I can understand the situation. In most of the cases, specially children feel upset wearing braces. It looks a bit occurred. But the parents must try to make them understand the utility of it.Braces can do miracles to our teeth .The entire set of teeth will be corrected .So,make them feel that there is nothing to feel shy.
